Ryan Reynolds: I feel more free playing Deadpool than almost anything else
Ryan Reynolds shared that finishing filming Deadpool & Wolverine made him feel very sad. He mentioned that playing the character in the movie allows him to feel more liberated than almost anything else in the world.
The 47-year-old actor from Hollywood is back in his iconic role as the profanity-using anti-hero Deadpool in the upcoming joint movie project. The film also stars Hugh Jackman in his returning role as the nearly invincible Wolverine.
This is the third movie focusing on the Marvel character Deadpool, following the first one in 2016 and the sequel in 2018 which were both successful.
In an interview with the PA news agency during a special preview event for the film in London, the actor discussed Deadpool's unique comedic approach of breaking the fourth wall. He described Deadpool as a character who is constantly surprising and keeping audiences on their toes.
I'm not sure if I can talk about that particular style in detail, but I must say that when I portray the character, I feel more liberated than with anything else in the world.
I understand how valuable it is to breathe that fresh air. And as we wrapped up filming on our final day, I don't think I've ever felt so disheartened to leave the set each day.
Jackman said he was amazed by Reynolds' performance and found it very amusing.
The Australian actor, who has been playfully pretending to disagree with Reynolds for a long time, humorously remarked: "And in real life, Ryan is quite boring, very boring, so it's fascinating to see how he changes."
Jackman has portrayed the character Wolverine in the X-Men film series starting from the 2000 movie X-Men all the way to 2016's X-Men: Apocalypse, where he makes a short uncredited appearance. He also starred in three standalone films, including 2017's Logan.
In 2018's Deadpool 2, we caught a quick sight of Wolverine, but now he will be sharing the spotlight with Reynolds in the upcoming sequel. The film will be helmed by Shawn Levy, known for his work on Stranger Things.
Jackman assured fans that the new movie will address some lingering questions about his character's story. He explained, "After portraying Wolverine for 24 years, I can promise that this film will show different sides of the character that have never been seen before."
"They crafted it with such precision and artistry. Trust me, fans are going to love it."
"I've been searching for a solution to some issues for a while, and we finally resolved them here."
Following his final portrayal of the character in the third Wolverine movie, Logan, Jackman admitted that he underestimated the physical challenges of returning to the role. Despite this, he expressed that the effort was completely worthwhile.
He said: "I believed I was finished, but after watching Deadpool 1, I had second thoughts."
"Several years later, while I was driving, I had a strong feeling deep down that I wanted to pursue that. I was confident that it would be a highly anticipated moment for fans. I was certain that it would introduce a new dynamic that had never been witnessed before."
"I didn't realize how physically challenging it would be to do at 55, but it was definitely worth it. I enjoyed every moment."
Reynolds also mentioned that the movie, set to premiere on July 25th, will be a celebration of happiness and come packed with unexpected twists.
"In top form, films of this nature should evoke a sense of wish fulfillment," he remarked.
You want to leave the movie theater feeling incredibly happy and fulfilled.
In addition, there are unexpected elements that make the situation surprising. I am surprised that we have been able to maintain this level of surprises for so long.
"The film will be released in a fortnight, so we can finally come out of hiding. It will be a relief to no longer have to conceal our actions."
The upcoming crossover movie will also include actress Emma Corrin from The Crown, as well as Morena Baccarin returning as Vanessa Carlysle, Leslie Uggams as Blind Al, and Karan Soni as Dopinder.
The cast will also feature Rob Delaney from Catastrophe and Matthew Macfadyen from Succession.
Deadpool and Wolverine will be showing in theaters starting on July 25th.
