Shannen Doherty's experience on the television show Charmed was nearly overshadowed by a disagreement she had with her fellow cast member Alyssa Milano.
Five years after leaving the popular teen show Beverly Hills, 90210, the lesser-known actress, who passed away from breast cancer at 53 on Saturday (13 July), was chosen to join the beloved TV series focused on the Halliwell sisters, who have magical powers.
Doherty, Milano and Holly Marie Combs were the main stars of the show, playing the characters Prue, Phoebe, and Piper. After three seasons, Doherty decided to leave the show.
When Doherty left the show, it was rumored that she and Milano didn't get along behind the scenes. However, the actors never publicly addressed the issue until Doherty talked about it on her podcast, Let's Be Clear.
In December 2023, Doherty mentioned that she thought Milano was trying to compete with her and claimed that she was causing an uncomfortable rift between her and Combs. Milano confessed that their relationship became so strained that they would frequently avoid speaking to each other.
"There were instances where I greeted Shannen with a 'Good morning' and she didn't respond, and there were times when she greeted me and I didn't respond back," explained Milano. It was reported that a mediator was brought in to help mend their relationship.
In 2021, Doherty suggested there was a lot of chaos on the show in an interview with Entertainment Weekly after she left. She mentioned that she felt there was too much conflict on set and not enough enthusiasm for the job. Doherty, who is now 30 years old, made it clear that she no longer has patience for drama in her life.
Although she didn't specifically mention Milano, she expressed that she would miss Combs. She clarified that they never had any issues and are still close friends.
During an appearance on Doherty's Let's Be Clear podcast in December 2023, Combs stated that Milano had caused their co-star to lose their job by giving producers an "ultimatum."

Earlier this year, Milano refuted the accusations during an appearance at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, stating that she is disappointed that the negative energy surrounding the show continues to linger even after all this time, affecting both fans and the show itself.
Combs reiterated her claims, saying, "This is not changing the past. This is just the past she tried to hide from everyone."
Doherty mentioned that, considering her health problems, she wants the truth to be told instead of the story that others tell about her.
She also mentioned in the podcast that she never caused any tension on set, saying: "I spent a year thinking back on everything and trying to remember those instances - but I couldn't recall them. I don't remember ever being unkind to [Milano] while filming."
The two didn't always seem to be fighting. Milano, who invited her co-stars to be bridesmaids at her wedding in 1999, expressed in a special about Charmed: "I think we're very fortunate that the three of us came together."
