Dion, who is 59 years old, disclosed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, an uncommon and untreatable neurological ailment that can result in severe muscle spasms. As a consequence, she had to cancel all of her scheduled performances.

According to Dion's statement, the spasms she is experiencing are severely impacting her day-to-day life. Occasionally, they even hinder her ability to walk and prevent her from using her voice to sing as she normally would.

She expressed, "My expertise is solely in singing. It has been my primary occupation throughout my existence. Plus, there is nothing that I cherish more than performing music."

As per the Stiff Person Syndrome Foundation, this illness impacts the central nervous system, which is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The foundation states that individuals with this condition may have severe limitations in their ability to function, and may even require a wheelchair or be bedridden. Additionally, they may be incapable of taking care of themselves or even working due to the neurological disease featuring autoimmune traits. Symptoms of this condition may manifest as hyper-stiffness, severe discomfort, long-term anxiety, and muscular contractions so intense that they may even lead to joint dislocations or bone fractures.

Kotb, who is 59 years old, revealed that Dion had doubts about surviving and making it through the ordeal.

She went on to say, "She discusses the impact it has had on her singing ability and the potential for a return."

Céline Dion is uncertain regarding her upcoming performances, but she is putting in a lot of effort. She stated that she would rely on her body to inform her when she is ready to return to the stage.

Kotb stated that they longed for her and the interview was filled with emotions. She traveled to Las Vegas to conduct the interview with the famous musician who has won five Grammy awards. Kotb added that they are curious to see the progress she has made on her comeback journey.

The discussion between Kotb and Dion will be broadcasted on Today and a special NBC News show on June 11, just before the release of her Amazon Prime documentary, I Am: Céline Dion, on June 25.

Dion expressed his strong longing for the place by saying, "I have a great yearning for the people and the place. Even if I am unable to run, I will still choose to walk and if I cannot walk, I will crawl to reach there."
