Canelo Alvarez had a commanding victory over Edgar Berlanga on the weekend of Mexican Independence Day, winning by unanimous decision with scores of 117-110, 118-109, and 118-109. The fight took place on Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Although Berlanga managed to stay somewhat engaged during the match, he was clearly outperformed in every aspect of the sport. Fortunately, the result was beyond question. There was no way to argue that Berlanga had a competitive fight. It could even be argued that Canelo dominated each round, which would be a more convincing point.

Canelo's victory was largely due to his faster hands and exceptional boxing skills. The Mexican star effectively utilized his jab and delivered smart hooks from either side. It was a hook that caused the only knockdown in the match, as Alvarez sent Berlanga to the canvas in the third round. However, the tough Puerto Rican demonstrated his resilience by getting back on his feet and going the full 12 rounds in an intense battle.

A fast and powerful left hook sent Berlanga to the canvas in the third round.

Berlanga was unharmed and quickly got back up. Instead of backing off after being knocked down, he actually moved in closer and took the hits head-on.

Following the match, Terence Crawford expressed his desire to face Canelo by posting a message on X.

Crawford might not see his hopes come true. Canelo has expressed a desire to face Dmitry Bivol again in May, assuming he wins against Artur Beterbiev and secures the title of undisputed light heavyweight champion.

Despite that, Crawford's chances of winning the appeal are slim. Shawn Porter, a former world champion and current commentator, has challenged Berlanga, highlighting his "moral" victory.

Following the match, Berlanga seemed genuinely pleased with the opportunity he had. He emphasized his gratitude to Canelo several times for the chance he was given, and his words conveyed the impression of someone who never really believed he could come out on top.

It will be intriguing to observe how fans respond to that perspective, particularly dedicated Puerto Rican boxing supporters.

Canelo's ex-promoter and current rival, Oscar De La Hoya, took to X to express his disapproval of the match, likely because it didn't finish with a knockout.

While Canelo might not have the same knockout power he used to, his boxing technique remains sharp. He demonstrated that he is significantly superior to Berlanga, which led to a decisive victory.

Canelo's Previous Five Matches Leading Up to His Victory Against Edgar Berlanga

If Canelo goes up against Bivol or Beterbiev in May, he won’t have to stress about critics challenging his selection of opponents. Both Bivol and Beterbiev are formidable fighters, and Bivol has already defeated Canelo in the past.

Berlanga may have improved his reputation. Many people didn't think he had a good chance of winning the match. Regardless, he demonstrated that he is resilient.
