Humphrey's wedding proposal in Beyond Paradise was more romantic than it should have been

Beyond Paradise

Following a difficult IVF experience that caused a significant divide between them, the couple almost broke up in the finale. However, they eventually decided to fight for their love and were able to reconcile their relationship over time.

Sally Bretton, in a recent interview with RadioTimes.com and other media outlets, expressed that the characters in the show have found a stable ground and are no longer enduring the chaos of their past experiences. With season 2 on the horizon, she revealed that "they're in a good place" and the viewers can expect a difference in the atmosphere compared to the first season.

Kris Marshall talked about how Humphrey and Martha's strong bond as a couple was one of the main reasons for creating the spin-off show. He emphasized their unity and closeness as a notable aspect.

According to him, they are highly compatible and do not place any demands on each other; rather, they allow one another to just be. This quality makes them exceptionally resilient and united.

Their partnership has its share of difficulties and is frequently unorthodox, but they make a fantastic duo who enjoy each other's company and this is evident in the current season.

Now that they have become more stable, they are shifting their attention towards finding ways to assist others.

However, Humphrey and Martha had never truly thought about getting married until the social worker brought up the topic. This situation did not exactly evoke feelings of romance.

Without previously consulting Martha, Humphrey went ahead and booked their upcoming wedding in just a matter of weeks. This sudden information was presented to Martha after a tense chat with her mother, adding fuel to the fire.

He reflected on Hannah's comment regarding their unmarried status. This provoked him to ponder: what is preventing them from getting married?

"I have no idea," she answered. "I think we just haven't had the chance to do it yet."

In writing, everything appears unemotional and pragmatic, as if they're deliberating the installation of a wooden platform in Anne's backyard or contemplating refurbishing their boat.

Humphrey mistakenly gave Martha a paper containing information about their upcoming log burner maintenance. However, he promptly switched it with a document containing details about their wedding.

Once more, the situation can seem trite and lacking in romance. However, Humphrey's action, carried out with genuine sincerity by Marshall, ultimately had a more romantic impact than expected.

Sally Bretton starred as Martha and Kris Marshall played Humphrey in the TV drama Beyond Paradise produced by Red Planet Pictures and Joss Barratt.

Normally, Humphrey Goodman isn't referred to as 'smooth' or 'assertive'. However, in that situation, he demonstrated both qualities, while still maintaining his typical kind and clumsy personality (it wouldn't be Humphrey without a hilarious mistake).

Even though it wasn't exactly traditional, they are not either, as Marshall previously pointed out. Therefore, why bother with normalcy?

It's important to mention that there were two major events that happened prior to this particular moment. First, Humphrey left his life behind in Saint Marie for Martha. Second, Martha went all the way to the Caribbean to try and save their relationship. Given these past big events, the low-key vibe of this moment was a perfect match for them, even though it was still incredibly picturesque and perfect.

The fact that Humphrey had an intuitive understanding of Martha's desires and needs, even without her expressing them, demonstrates how well they are attuned to each other.

Moreover, this isn't solely regarding their romantic connection; it's also concerning their transition into parenthood. Getting married is unquestionably a significant pledge that strengthens their emotional and legal bond, but having a child or even multiple children brings forth the ultimate obligation and showcases their unwavering loyalty to one another.

This feeling intensifies if you take into account that previously, the inability to have a child meant not only the conclusion of their journey as parents but also the termination of their relationship.

However, we can see that they are now more united than ever before, as they face the biggest challenge of their lives.

Humphrey's suggestion was expected to be a letdown, but it turned out to be surprisingly romantic and appropriate beyond our expectations.

The second season of Beyond Paradise will be airing on BBC One and iPlayer on Friday, April 12th.
