Beyond Paradise

As the first episode of the new Death in Paradise spin-off Beyond Paradise came to air last night (February 24), fans of the original series tuned in eagerly in anticipation of the return of DI Humphrey Goodman. Having swapped the shores of Saint Marie for the slips of Shipton Abbott, Humphrey was back with a bang as he took on an attack that the victim claimed was carried out by a ghost.

Marshall starred as Humphrey on Death in Paradise from 2014 to 2017, having taken over the leading role in place of Ben Miller's (spoiler alert) murdered DI Richard Poole. He quickly won over audiences and is fondly remembered by many viewers as the show's best lead to date.

And it seems as though many were glad to see him back again as he graced the shores of (allegedly) Devon. With the general feedback from the series premiere being joyful and grateful for the return, particular praise was reserved for Marshall.

@BritLambert29 was quick to praise Marshall's comedic turn, saying: "First episode of #BeyondParadise did not disappoint. Perfect way to introduce the DI. Lotsa gags. Good story and subplot. Well-paced and Kris Marshall was in excellent comedic form.

@xx_Michelle_oo said the series "did not disappoint", adding: "It's fantastic having Kris Marshall back on our screens."

@FunniBirdie, as a long-time fan, was looking forward to his return, saying: I've been in love with Kris Marshall for over 20 years, so to see him back as Humphrey in Death in Paradise spin off #BeyondParadise is a treat!"

@DianeHaywood71 said he made for "perfect Friday night TV", saying: "Kris Marshall back as Humphrey again is perfect Friday night tv. Made me laugh, but also brought a lump to my throat."

@maxrodgers94 was effusive in his praise for the whole series debut, saying: "An excellent first episode of #BeyondParadise - wonderful setting, great supporting cast, devilishly intriguing mystery, and a fine return to form for Kris Marshall as Humphrey."

DI Goodman's return to the small screen came in typically clumsy fashion, as he was first introduced having gotten himself stuck in a tree during a hang-gliding lesson. As well as having fervour for the actor, viewers also revelled in having the character back on their TVs.

@wlwhaze, a fan from the Death in Paradise days, said she was delighted to see Marshall back again: "Kris Marshall used to be the detective in [Death in Paradise] and he was my FAVE so I’m so excited that his character is back!"

@CameronYardeJnr had similar fond memories, saying: "Good to have Kris Marshall back as D.I. Humphrey Goodman. My favourite Death In Paradise detective."

@juleslov1 summed it up by saying of his entrance: "Great start - exactly what I expected from the D.I [I] love."

However, the show was not without its controversies as the debate over the setting and location of the show was brought to light minutes into the series debut. Being set in the fictional Devon abode of Shipton Abbott but filmed over the Cornish border in Looe, many fans were quick to jump on the distinction.
