Olympics 2024: Beth Potter wins bronze in women's triathlon after River Seine passes water quality tests

Beth Potter

Beth Potter won a medal for Team Great Britain at the Paris Olympics. She came in third place in the women's triathlon on Tuesday morning.

French athlete Cassandre Beaugrand won an exciting race with the help of her fans in Paris, beating Switzerland's Julie Derron.

Beaugrand finished first with a time of 1 hour, 54 minutes, and 55 seconds, beating Derron by six seconds. Potter came in 15 seconds later, while Emma Lombardi narrowly missed out on a medal.

"I am thrilled to have competed in the event, but unfortunately Cassandre and Julie outperformed me today," Potter expressed to BBC Sport.

I am thrilled to have won the bronze medal. It has been a journey of eight years to reach this point, and I am overjoyed to be here.

I believe I did it for myself, but also for all those who supported me and had faith in me during the past eight years.

Olympic planners gave the green light for the triathlon to proceed on Tuesday morning after the River Seine passed water quality tests. There were worries about high levels of bacteria in the river, but the event was cleared to go ahead.

Test results were received at 3:20am and indicated a decrease in bacteria levels following the postponement of the men's triathlon on Tuesday.

Georgia Taylor-Brown from Great Britain, who came in second place in the Tokyo race, ended up in sixth place after falling behind the front group during the running portion. Kate Waugh finished in 15th place.

The reigning champion, Flora Duffy, was the one to take the lead during the swim. Potter was close behind, exiting the water in fifth place. A group of 10 athletes then formed at the front of the race.

Just like before, the weather affected the athletes in Paris as the rainy streets led to more chaos with a few athletes falling off their bikes.

The competition started to change during the switching from biking to running. Taylor-Brown was one of the athletes who fell behind, and later admitted that she was running low on energy.

Beaugrand, fueled by the cheers of her French fans, took the lead at the start of the last lap during the 10km race. A small group of four athletes were able to distance themselves from the pack, with Lombardi narrowly missing out on a spot on the podium while Potter secured the bronze medal.
