‘I was going for gold but I’m super happy with bronze’ – Potter’s pride at Olympic display
Beth Potter, a British athlete, may not have been the top favorite for the gold medal at the Paris Olympics, but she was thrilled to win the bronze. Cassandre Beaugrand ended up taking home the gold, but Beth Potter was very proud of her achievement.
It had been eight years since Potter last competed in the Olympics, where he raced in the 10,000 meters on the track in Rio.
Her switch to triathlon has been impressive and she won the World Championship for the first time last year.
'I Have Come Far'
In Paris, things went mostly according to our plans. We had a successful swim followed by a challenging bike ride in tough early-morning weather conditions. There were strong currents in the River Seine and slippery cobbles and road markings due to overnight rain.
As the race began, Potter found themselves in a competitive position alongside fellow runners Beaugrand, Lombardi, and Derron.
Beaugrand surged ahead in the last lap of the 10k run, leaving her competitors behind. Derron ran the best race of her life and managed to secure the silver medal, just edging past Potter.
Potter shared with the BBC later on: "I am thrilled. I wanted to win the gold, but Cassandre and Julie performed better than me today. I am extremely happy to have won a bronze."
I saw Vicky Holland and Non Stanford compete on Copacabana Beach eight years ago when I was part of the track team. It feels incredible to have come so far since then and to now be standing here, having won a bronze medal.
Avoiding Trouble
She expressed uncertainty about the significance of the medal, saying, "I'm not sure. I think I earned it for myself, but I also earned it for all the people who supported me for the past eight years and believed in me since the beginning. So, yeah, it's dedicated to them."
Observing the competition and taking into account the challenging circumstances, she stated: "My coach advised me to aim for the top five and to maintain a position near the front of the pack. I focused on avoiding any potential incidents."
I got delayed by a few accidents while biking, but I stayed balanced and made sure to ride cautiously without taking any risks. Safety first!
The forecast predicted no rain, but it actually turned out to be very wet. I am familiar with the rainy weather in Leeds as I often practice there, and have trained in similar conditions with my teammates before, so I was ready for it. My main goal was to avoid any mishaps, so I made sure to take extra precautions to stay safe.
