Beth Potter woke up to a gloomy and rainy morning in Paris, but ended up winning an Olympic bronze medal after competing in an extremely challenging triathlon.
How well would she do in the murky depths of the Seine? Surprisingly, she finished in fourth place after the challenging swim, with the swirling river making it difficult for everyone.
The cleverest person swam towards the center of the stream when leaving the Pont Alexandre III bridge, and stayed close to the bank on the way back. There was no time to drink any of the dirty water, even though it was deemed safe to swim in after concerns about E.coli.
Because of these issues, the men's triathlon had to be rescheduled for Wednesday, just shortly after Potter had returned home and changed clothes.
The woman from Scotland, accompanied by her parents Alex and Ann who used to work as doctors, as well as numerous other family members, climbed the 36 steps of the Pont bridge after swimming, placing fourth and getting ready to start the biking portion of the race.
Beth Potter secured a third-place finish in the women's triathlon on Wednesday morning.
Potter fell to the ground in exhaustion after finishing the race that lasted almost two hours.
Potter was among the top group of competitors after the swimming portion and held onto her position.
Cassandre Beaugrand won the gold medal in the triathlon at the Olympics, making her the first French athlete to achieve this feat.
Swiss athlete Julie Derron narrowly beat Potter to win the second-place silver medal in Paris, France.
She was one of the main runners in the top group of 10 or 11 runners during the 10K race, which promised an exciting finish. Four runners battled for the lead in the race. Among them were her, Swiss athlete Julie Derron (who won the silver medal), and the French runners Cassandre Beaugrand and Emma Lombardi (who finished in fourth place).
Beaugrand, who is widely considered the best runner, proved herself by winning the gold medal. She seemed to be in complete command of the race. The competition was fierce for the silver and bronze medals.
Potter, a 33-year-old athlete from Glasgow, performed admirably in her vibrant yellow shoes to secure the bronze medal. She credited her strong training partnership with double Olympic champion Alistair Brownlee for pushing her to improve her training quality. Brownlee was present to support Potter and their training bond was evident in their celebratory embrace, symbolizing the passing on of knowledge and support.
Potter came in 15 seconds after Beaugrand, who credited her achievement in part to training in Loughborough, where Seb Coe attended, for being able to handle the damp, but drying, weather. Several of her competitors crashed on the bike, slipping on the white paint of a zebra crossing.
