Paris Olympics 2024: Ben Proud and Duncan Scott keep Team GB medal hopes alive in swimming heats, Leon Marchand through - Eurosport
Ben Proud and Duncan Scott were the top swimmers from Britain in the morning heats, along with Caeleb Dressel and Leon Marchand, who all moved on to the semi-finals. However, some swimmers had an easier time advancing than others.
Proud raced swiftly in his 50m freestyle heat and secured the fifth fastest qualifying time. Australian swimmer Cameron McAvoy led the way in the fast-paced race, while defending Olympic champion Dressel barely made it to the next round, winning by just 0.06 seconds.
In the meantime, the standout performer of the Olympics, Marchand, came back to compete just 13 hours after winning two gold medals. He easily advanced to the semi-finals of the 200m medley, finishing behind Scott and Japan's Daiya Seto.
Having already won a gold medal in Paris, Scott didn't take the lead until the end of the race against Marchand. He was in fourth place after the breaststroke length, but made a strong comeback in the freestyle to win the heat. Tom Dean also qualified for tonight's semi-finals, finishing tied for seventh place.
Scott was the only one to make it to the top three, but all three men still have a chance to win. GB's Honey Osrin and Katie Shanahan are also still in the running for the 200m backstroke.
Osrin stayed connected with Kylie Masse from Canada during her heat and ended up being the fifth-quickest swimmer, but lost some ground towards the end.
Shanahan didn't start well in the last qualifying race, but she caught up to her competitors in the middle section. However, she fell behind again in the last 50 meters and finished in eleventh place.
The women's 4x200m freestyle team from Team GB had a close competition with Brazil and New Zealand, but they managed to secure a spot in the final tonight. They finished seventh in their heat, behind the USA and Brazil.
Freya Anderson had a great swim, but all teams will have to step up their game to beat Australia, who broke the world record and finished seven seconds ahead of the second-best country.
"Summer Of Marchand: A Tale Of Two Superstars"
Everyone was watching Marchand closely to see if the French star could keep up his impressive performance at La Defense Arena during the summer.
He successfully completed the first two legs of the race in a competitive manner before showcasing his strong breaststroke technique, which helped him move into second place as they approached the final turn.
The full audience knew the routine so well that they could recite it from memory. They cheered "Allez" in perfect unison as Marchand emerged from the water, then watched as he slowed down for the last part of the race and finished just behind Scott, to their delight.
He is close to matching Dressel's record of five gold medals from Tokyo, but the American sprinter barely made it into the 50m freestyle semi-finals as the 14th fastest qualifier. If he had been just slightly slower, he would have had to race against his fellow American, Chris Giuliano.
McEvoy took the lead in Dressel's heat as soon as the swimmers surfaced and he maintained his position, with Dressel trailing in sixth place, over half a second behind.
