European football: Olise sparkles as Bayern Munich crush Werder Bremen
Bayern Munich continued their flawless run in the Bundesliga, with Michael Olise netting two goals and assisting two others, leading to a dominant 5-0 win against Werder Bremen at the Weserstadion.
After experiencing an unexpected 1-0 loss to Bremen during their last league encounter in January, the Bavarians bounced back with a solid victory, achieving a total of 12 points from four games. Jamal Musiala commented, “[Olise] is an excellent player. We communicate effectively and understand each other well. The more matches we play together, the stronger our connection will become. He has a lot of talent.”
Olise, who joined from Crystal Palace for an initial fee of £45 million in July, has rapidly become a key player in the starting lineup. He once more justified Vincent Kompany's trust in him by being a significant contributor to Bayern’s offensive efforts.
Bayern, who have netted 20 goals in their last three games in all competitions, took the lead in the 23rd minute. Harry Kane grabbed the ball near the edge of the box and passed it to Olise, who then sent a shot past Bremen's goalkeeper, Michael Zetterer. Later, in the 32nd minute, the winger maneuvered into Bremen's penalty area, and his pass was finished off by Musiala.
After halftime, Bayern kept pressing their advantage, and Olise set up Kane for a shot from near the penalty area, resulting in Kane's 41st goal in the Bundesliga. This achievement made him the top-scoring English player in the history of the league. Olise added his fifth goal in just three games with a beautiful side-footed shot that found the top corner of the net. Serge Gnabry, who came on as a substitute, completed the scoring in the 65th minute.
“It’s been an amazing week. I really commend the team for their mindset and approach,” Kane mentioned. “Our performance both with and without the ball has been impressive. The entire squad is being utilized effectively, the players are improving their fitness, and even after scoring three, four, or five goals, we kept pushing for more.”
Bayern had to play without their experienced goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, who was initially included in the starting lineup but had to step aside after warm-ups because of a thigh injury. However, this substitution didn't affect the game significantly. His replacement, Sven Ulreich, had a calm match and didn’t have to deal with any shots on goal from a Bremen side that struggled to create any threats.
