Bumper Bank Holiday for jubilant Torquay United
Brad Ash scored an exciting last-minute goal at Chesham.
Torquay United had two very different games over the Bank Holiday weekend, but they showed resilience and determination in both to earn six points.
Following Lirak Hasani's lone goal and a determined defensive effort that led to a 1-0 victory over Dorking Wanderers at Plainmoor on Saturday, the Gulls pulled off a thrilling 3-2 win at Chesham on Monday, just two days later.
The highest number of points earned helped United move to second place in the National League South, closely trailing behind Slough Town based on goal difference.
Manager Paul Wotton decided to switch up the lineup for the team's Monday game in Buckinghamshire. The match started off slow, with both teams trying to find their rhythm. Cody Cooke had the first opportunity to score for the team, but unfortunately, he missed the target from 18 yards away.
Chesham responded by applying some light pressure, with both Callum Adebiyi and Jack Cawley having shots on goal that did not trouble James Hamon too much. Hamon had a great performance in goal against Dorking. We will talk more about Jack Cawley later on.
The team playing at home was finally rewarded for their excellent performance in the 36th minute. Joe Grant shot a powerful low drive through a busy penalty area and scored in the bottom corner.
The goal energized United and they had Chesham scrambling, especially when Cawley handled a shot from Finn Tonks on the goalline, resulting in a clear penalty and a red card.
Cooke calmly scored the penalty kick, giving United a full second half to play with a one-man advantage.
Hasani took a long shot that went straight into the hands of the opposing goalkeeper at the beginning of the second half. However, Chesham, despite having fewer players on the field, were still posing a threat and playing well.
United was shocked when Torquay scored first in the second half of the game. Grant scored the goal after a great team play. However, Torquay's response was quick and powerful.
Omar Mussa was able to test Ben Goode with a strong shot, but Dan Hayfield scored a beautiful goal on the 70th minute. He hit a low shot from afar that found the back of the net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance to save it.
Chesham kept putting pressure on, and United had to rely on a solid block from Hamon to stop them. As the game neared its end, Mussa and Oscar Threlkeld passed the ball to Dean Moxey, who then crossed it to Brad Ash for the winning goal.
Even though it may have seemed unfair to Chesham, United didn't pay much attention to the Yellow Army as they celebrated their victory. The beginning of the Wotton / Bryn era has been successful, and upcoming games at home against Aveley and Chippenham Town are something to look forward to.
United: In the game, players like James Hamon, Jay Foulston, Sam Dreyer, Lirak Hasani, Omar Mussa, Roddy Collins, Oscar Threlkeld, Matt Carson, Dean Moxey, Jadyn Crosbie, Brad Ash, Ed Palmer, Finn Tonks, Cody Cooke, and Ben Seymour were seen on the field.
