Villa miss chance to go top of Premier League

Aston Villa

During their match against Sheffield United, Aston Villa had numerous instances where they believed they deserved a penalty, but the VAR system did not agree. Additionally, a goal that they scored was also disallowed by VAR.

Aston Villa had the opportunity to become the top team in the Premier League, but they were unable to achieve this as Sheffield United held them to a draw at their home.

The Blades were surprised when Cameron Archer, who was previously part of Villa but now part of their team, scored the first goal from a short distance during the 88th minute.

Nicolo Zaniolo replaced someone and scored a goal in the last few moments of the game to earn a tie for Villa. However, they were unable to get another goal to win the game.

Villa required a victory to become the top team for the first time since August 2011. They haven't held the first position in the championship at this point of the year for a quarter-century.

Despite having more possession and opportunities to score, they are still second to Arsenal because of goal difference.

During the second half, Leon Bailey scored a goal, which was earlier thought to be valid, but upon the consultation of the video assistant referee, the goal was ultimately disallowed.

In the initial phase, Villa attempted to score twice, but the keeper of United, Wes Foderingham, prevented it by diving down to save a low shot from Moussa Diaby. Afterwards, Ezri Konsa attempted to head the ball into the United goal from a corner taken by John McGinn, but unfortunately, he missed the target.

The fans were also upset with VAR since it agreed with referee Anthony Taylor's call to not give a penalty in the 11th minute when Vinicius Souza collided with Ollie Watkins and knocked him down.

Despite the interval break, VAR persisted in rejecting Villa's efforts, and the referees ruled that Jacob Ramsey had committed a foul against Foderingham during a corner. However, Bailey managed to score just before the 60th minute.

In the 88th minute, they were caught off guard and taken by surprise when Archer scored after receiving Gustavo Hamer's pass from inside the six-yard box. However, in the 97th minute, Zaniolo managed to score a goal by beating Foderingham after Douglas Luiz's cross, providing some slight comfort.

Villa's Holiday Hopes Crushed

Before this game, people were mostly speaking about how a victory for Villa would make them be in the first place in the Premier League table for the first time after 18 games since they were on top at Christmas in 1998.

Unai Emery's team had a remarkable feat of securing 15 consecutive home league victories at Villa Park which is a record for their club. They even won against big teams like Manchester City and Arsenal in their previous matches. Their successful run has pushed them to be strong contenders for the title. However, their impressive run has come to an end.

Undoubtedly, the manager of United, Chris Wilder, approached this match with the mindset of facing a team competing for the title. His team adapted a 5-4-1 formation whenever Villa had control of the ball.

For the majority of the match, Villa held on to the ball 78% of the time for over 100 minutes. Although the style of play was not aesthetically pleasing, it effectively prevented the hosts from making any progress and nullified their skilled players.

The fans were disappointed and annoyed after seeing a pre-game entertainment involving a display of lights and pyrotechnics. Their excitement turned into frustration because they were hoping their team would ascend to the highest rank in English football.

As the tension increased and the guests became more daring, what was supposed to be a grand evening for Villa ended up being a disappointment.

United deserve recognition for their recent performance as they have accumulated four points in three games after Wilder's comeback, which is a great indication of their chances to stay in the Premier League. They managed to lift themselves from the bottom of the table, despite being five points away from safety, after Zaniolo's goal that ended the game in a draw.

Bailey Denied Goal By Ramsey Foul

Instead of focusing on the actual game, the story of this match turned into yet another saga about the referee's rulings; some of which were reversed by VAR and some that weren't.

The incident where Villa faced officials occurred when Watkins attempted to connect with Digne's high cross. Souza seemed to push Watkins down even before he had the opportunity to head the ball.

Taylor did not consider it to be a mistake that was evident and unambiguous. Therefore, the verdict that was given on the field was upheld.

The hosts missed out on a goal once more when Bailey appeared to score after receiving a precise pass from Watkins, but unfortunately, it was denied. This happened because United's full-back George Baldock was stripped of the ball while defending his own box.

Even though it wasn't evident at first sight, the replays indicated that Ramsey had grabbed Foderingham's arm during the set piece.

Baldock had a stroke of luck when, moments later, the ball seemed to touch his arm within the penalty box. However, despite a review from referee Taylor and VAR, they concluded that the ball had actually made contact with his chest.
