Pistyll Pablo crowned champion at Welsh Multi-breed beef calf championship

Championship

The Welsh Multibreed Pedigree Beef Calf Championship took place at Carmarthern Market, where Pistyll Pablo, an adorable Simmental bull calf born in January 2023 and bred by G. A. and H. M. Francis of Pistyll Uchaf in Abergorlech, Carmarthen, emerged as the Overall Continental Interbreed and Simmental Champion.

The Pistyll group has 20 female breeding cows and also manages a 45 cow suckler herd. They recently won the Interbreed title for the second year in a row. This accomplishment follows their initial win with their young bull, Pistyll Nitro, who is the son of Ballinalare Farm Galaxy.

The winner of this year's competition, Pistyll Pablo, comes from a lineage of notable heritage. He is one of the earliest calves sired by Pitmudie Lancelot 20, a prized bull bought for a hefty sum of 8,200gns at Stirling in February 2022. His mother, Pistyll Ivy, is the daughter of Carbery Fintona. Pistyll Pablo further showcased his exceptional qualities by winning his category in the Simmental Youngstock Show, which was a part of the Borderway Agri Expo in Carlisle in October.

The group also achieved victory with Pistyll Nightrider, who recently received the title of Europe's reserve champion. Nightrider was sired by the respected Team Celtic and was born to Pistyll Frances VG87, who is a daughter of Brookwood Alla King. During the start of the summer season, Pistyll Nightrider was named champion of the Simmental Male division during the Royal Welsh Show.

James Kimber, who manages Beanhill Farm in Wiltshire, assessed the Simmental category during the Welsh Pedigree Beef Championship. Meanwhile, Josh Briggs from Lighthorne, Warwick, served as the judge for the Interbreed competition. After selecting the winner for the Simmental group, Mr. Kimber remarked, "This young Simmental bull is quite intelligent and is perfectly built to become a stock bull."

Anwen Jones from St. Clears in Carmarthen had the winning calf, Cefngwlad Prince Harri, in the Simmental section at the Reserve. This young bull is only five months old and is the child of Penwern Merlin 21 and Cefngwlad Nutmegs Gold EX93.
