As a child, observing his father in the tavern motivated a man to strive to be the "top contender."

Greg Foster has achieved the feat of becoming the champion of the UK and Ireland Professional Arm-wrestling Associations (PAA) in 2023.

At the beginning of this year, he emerged victorious from a pool of around 150 participants. Presently, he is relentlessly pursuing his aspiration to be the champion of the world.

However, what is the process of becoming a professional arm wrestler?

Greg recollected from his childhood that his father possessed a great amount of strength. He used to observe his father in the tavern, where he would challenge other men in an arm-wrestling competition.

"Afterwards, I noticed the same pattern occurring with my elder brother, which motivated me to challenge myself and I was successful in overcoming those challenges."

"I suppose it was instilled in me from a young age that demonstrating physical power was achieved by winning arm-wrestling matches."

The picture was taken by Dean Bolt.

Before the competition, Greg mentioned that practicing with ex-British and World Champion Dean Bolt was very beneficial.

At the age of 35, he was accustomed to playing rugby. However, after retiring from the sport in 2018, he still felt the desire to participate in another form of competition.

During my honeymoon in Hawaii, I stumbled upon a televised competition which piqued my interest. As I watched the contestants, an idea formed in my mind - "How can I participate in this?"

In 2019, he stumbled upon the Welsh Warriors, who are located in Merthyr Tydfil.

Within the club were individuals who had previously achieved great success in their field such as David Bradford, a former champion in Britain, and Dean Bolt, a former world and British champion, who also happens to be Greg's training companion.

They informed me that I possessed the power, but had to acquire the skill.

He shared, "I continued to learn at a gradual pace, improving my skills and gradually making my way up from the amateur level to the professional level."

Training For Champion Arm Wrestling?

In the year 2022, Greg participated in the competition, but unfortunately, he didn't win any medals. However, Dean Bolt was triumphant and was awarded the bronze.

"That occurrence boosted my self-assurance and aided in my acquisition of knowledge."

He mentioned that it is an atypical form of exercise that demands one's optimal performance as even minor ailments can impede progress, highlighting the significance of taking breaks.

Since you engage in continuous training, you are likely to sustain injuries that require your care and attention.

There is a delicate balance between undergoing training to increase strength and potentially exacerbating one's current condition.

According to Greg, he was informed that his hands were large and his arms were long, which gave him an inborn talent for arm-wrestling.

Greg likened the agony from torn ligaments and tendons to experiencing excruciating toothache in one's arms.

He stated that it was crucial for him to appear at the competition in good health.

Ensure that you reach your highest point at that specific moment.

"When I first began, I used to train until the event and have minor physical discomforts. However, now I understand the importance of pushing myself to the limit during training and then taking a rest to achieve optimal physical condition for the competition," he expressed.

He expressed his excitement about winning the championship by saying that he was "buzzing". He proudly flaunted his victory by raising both arms, where his right arm had a silver medal and his left arm had a gold medal.

According to Greg, participating in arm-wrestling requires considerable physical effort, yet it is highly enjoyable.

It was truly an added bonus for me to defeat two previous champions."

I really want to go to Greece for the upcoming International Federation of Arm Wrestling (IFA) World Championships.
