"My partner and I enjoy playing it together on the couch every morning," Josh Wardle, a software engineer from New York, shared with Newsweek in January 2022. "She usually manages to solve it in just three tries, which is far better than I could ever do. I typically require at least four or five attempts."

After several years of developing the original idea, Wardle, who is from Wales, refined Wordle during the lockdowns caused by COVID-19 and launched it for everyone to enjoy in October 2021.

After its official launch, Wordle saw a dramatic increase in popularity, growing from just 90 users on November 1, 2021, to 300,000 by January 2, 2022, as reported by Statista. Shortly thereafter, The New York Times acquired the game for an undisclosed amount in the seven figures, and it quickly became the most popular game offered by the publication.

One of the main draws of Wordle is how straightforward it is. Players have six chances to figure out a five-letter word. If they see gray tiles, it means that the letters are not part of the word at all. Yellow tiles show that the letter is included, but it's in the wrong spot, while green lets players know that the letter is both in the word and in the right position.

Erhan Aslan, a specialist in applied linguistics and a professor at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, offered some valuable tips for Wordle enthusiasts during an interview with Newsweek.

Aslan mentioned that picking the right starting word is crucial in this game. He suggested beginning with words that have frequently used vowels like 'e' and 'a' and consonants like 'r' and 't', along with familiar sound patterns, as these can be beneficial.

Opting for a word that begins with letters like q, z, j, or x might not be the smartest move. You'll receive better clues after making a few guesses. It's important for players to use their understanding of sounds and letter patterns to help refine or eliminate some possibilities they have in mind.
