The Hardacres is set to debut on Channel 5 soon.

Produced by Playground, the same company responsible for All Creatures Great and Small, and commissioned by Paramount, this project draws inspiration from CL Skelton's popular novels, The Hardacre Family Saga, specifically the first two books.

The series tells the inspiring story of a working-class family that rises from a struggling life at a fish dock to eventually own a sprawling country estate in Yorkshire during the 1890s.

A workplace accident at the docks leads to difficult circumstances for them.

However, a fresh business opportunity lifts them out of their modest life on the North Yorkshire Coast and propels them into the upper echelons of society.

The stories from the books were transformed for television by screenwriters Amy Roberts and Loren McLaughlan.

McLaughlan mentioned, “Amy and I come from working-class backgrounds, and it’s uncommon to see stories about working-class individuals created by those same kinds of people. This brings a genuine touch to the narrative.”

"That was something that thrilled us right from the start."

"It’s a chance to portray a smart working-class family where the humor doesn’t come at their expense, which is something we often see in many comedies and dramas focused on working-class life."

Who’s In The Cast Of The Hardacres?

Claire Cooper plays the role of Mary Hardacre, a mother of three who, when confronted with financial struggles, devises a unique business concept that leads to a significant windfall for her family.

The actress referred to her character as "a powerful presence," shaped by the culture and scenery of Yorkshire.

"Life is more challenging over there, and she requires that resilience," she continued. "However, what makes her truly special is her positive outlook."

"She's not someone who just fantasizes; she has strong convictions, and that unwavering spirit is what truly characterizes her."

Cooper is the sole cast member hailing from Yorkshire. At 43 years old, he has also acted in the soap opera Hollyoaks and the American sci-fi series The Peripheral.

Liam McMahon portrays Sam Hardacre, a devoted family man and dockworker who faces financial difficulties after a workplace accident at the docks.

The Northern Irish actor expressed that he felt comfortable shooting in Ireland and fully took on the role of the working-class character, Sam.

“He’s someone who puts in a lot of effort and demonstrates what it means to be a dedicated worker in every aspect,” he stated. “He’s trustworthy, always there when you need him, and friendly.”

"He possesses characteristics that could instantly identify him as a leader."

He has acted in the movie Hunger and has also been featured in The Secret and Without You.

Julie Graham portrays the clever matriarch Ma, who is the mother of Mary Hardacre.

"She's loud and unruly. She can be quite disrespectful and untamed," Graham described her character in the series. "Her sense of right and wrong is a bit shaky, and she doesn't hold back her opinions. But underneath it all, she’s incredibly devoted and caring."

The 59-year-old from Scotland is most recognized for her roles in shows like The Bill, Benidorm, Shetland, and Two Doors Down.

Adam Little portrays Joe, the eldest son in the family, who serves as the outcast among them.

According to Little, the person is well-meaning but struggles to express it properly. He tends to complicate situations and often finds himself in difficult predicaments.

The actor mentioned that Joe experiences a feeling of being the "odd one out" in his family and carries a sense of solitude.

Viewers will recognize him from his performances in Years and Years, Ackley Bridge, and Coronation Street.

Where Was The Hardacres Filmed?

Even though the story takes place in Yorkshire, a significant portion of the filming for this series occurred in Ireland.

The coastal areas of Dublin and Wicklow served as the setting for Victorian Yorkshire.

Liam McMahon, the Northern Irish actor portraying Sam Hardacre, expressed: "I was able to return home to take on this role."

"I believe the themes are relatable to everyone, so whether it’s filmed in Ireland or Yorkshire doesn’t make much difference."

"During the 1890s, people everywhere faced similar challenges."

Adam Little, who is friends with Joe Hardacre, called Dublin "the greatest city in the world."

"Just talking about Ireland as a nation," he said, "It's truly an amazing place."
