‘The Acolyte’ Episode 8 Review: Finale Brings Plenty of Surprises for a Packed Season Ender

The Acolyte

And now, the polarizing initial season of The Acolyte has come to an end.

Similar to other Star Wars TV shows, The Acolyte held some major surprises until the final episode. Before that, some of us at Star Wars News Net thought the series was dragging a bit. However, that changed in the last episode. Personally, I think there was too much packed into the season finale. Some events felt rushed, while others weren't given enough attention. Despite the uneven pacing, I believe there were enough significant moments to justify a second season.

Let's address the obvious topic: Darth Plagueis. Although his name wasn't mentioned, the brief appearance of the mysterious figure in the caves suggests that it is indeed Darth Plagueis. It would be surprising if it wasn't him, given how closely the character resembles the descriptions in the books and comics. Including Plagueis in the story was a wise decision, in my opinion. He is a well-known and beloved character in the Star Wars Sith lore, and it was only a matter of time before he made an appearance in the franchise. The Acolyte is set 100 years before The Phantom Menace, so the timeline aligns perfectly for his involvement. How his story intersects with Darth Sidious, Osha, and The Stranger remains to be seen, but it sets the stage for an interesting follow-up storyline. I just wish we had seen more of him in the episode.

But let's go back and discuss the overall positives of the episode. It's impressive to see The Acolyte excelling in a particular area: the fight scenes. The dual battles between Osha and Mae, and Sol and The Stranger are very striking with moves and skills that haven't been shown on screen before. The hand-to-hand combat between Osha and Mae was especially exciting, as it showcased martial arts techniques rarely seen in the Star Wars universe. Watching Amandla Stenberg and the stunt team execute sweeps and ground vaults in long, continuous shots is a definite highlight for Star Wars fans. Additionally, the intense battle between Sol and The Stranger, where they utilize various Force abilities including a Force Repulse similar to The Force Unleashed, is a treat to watch.

I want to discuss another positive aspect of Master Sol's confession and the Jedi cover-up in The Acolyte. I have mentioned this comparison before on SWNN Live!, but The Acolyte is truly similar to The Last of Us: Part II in the world of Star Wars. The big story revelations, character deaths, and the way it portrays traditional heroes as villains all parallel the story of The Last of Us: Part II. The show effectively blurs the lines around the Jedi and demonstrates how the Sith were able to rise during this time. I also want to commend Lee Jung-jae for his outstanding portrayal of the morally ambiguous character of Master Sol. Just like how The Last of Us: Part II makes us view certain characters in a different way, The Acolyte also allows us to see both sides of Master Sol to some extent.

However, one aspect of the episode that didn't sit well with me was the way the ending played out. I felt that there were certain characters, like Vernestra Rwoh, who deserved more attention before the show wrapped up. Her choice to withhold information from the Senate tribunal was puzzling, and I'm still trying to grasp her motives. This decision ultimately contributed to the emergence of the Sith, a consequence that could have been avoided if she had acted differently.

Furthermore, why does Vernestra seek advice from Master Yoda after concealing the truth from the Republic Senate? It seems pointless now to ask for his guidance. Mae is another character who I believe deserves criticism in this regard. Why does she remain behind when she could have taken the opportunity to leave with Osha on her ship later? Why does she appear to be completely fine with Osha departing with The Stranger, despite the fact that there is still much uncertainty surrounding him? Some additional clarification would have been beneficial.

When I started watching the season finale of The Acolyte, I was pretty confident that it would get renewed for another season. But now, I am completely convinced that the creators and Leslye Headland are already planning ahead for more seasons. After seeing how the finale unfolded, I am definitely on board for more episodes. I am curious to see how they will explore Darth Plagueis and how Osha's storyline will connect to the larger timeline.

Nevertheless, I am confident that The Acolyte will need to make adjustments in the future. Whether or not you agree with the criticisms from viewers, those in charge are taking notice. Lucasfilm has the responsibility to distinguish between the extreme negativity and valid critiques. The Acolyte must work on its weaknesses while also maximizing its strengths. While it excels in action and plot development, it needs to work on pacing and character motivations.
