Snoop Dogg gives up smoking after years of marijuana use

Snoop Dogg, famous for openly smoking marijuana on various occasions, has announced that he is quitting the habit.

The surprise declaration was made by the hip-hop artist on social media, but his actual identity is Calvin Broadus.

"I have carefully reflected and discussed with my family, and I have made a decision to quit smoking. At this moment, I kindly request for my privacy to be respected," he shared on his Instagram account, which is available to the public and X.

He didn't mention the exact kind of smoking he intended on quitting and neither did he confirm if he was being sincere.

A few enthusiasts suspected that the blog post was a strategy to promote his marijuana business named Leafs By Snoop.

Many people responded with incredulity.

"Hey Snoop, It's not April Fools today," one person said.

Another person remarked, "Without smoke, Snoop is incomplete like the absence of water on earth."

The son of a famous reggae icon Bob Marley, Ro Marley expressed that they won't be having any more barbeque at their uncle's place as the grill has been turned off for this particular time period.

Snoop's consumption of cannabis has been frequently discussed in his music and interviews.

The hip-hop artist, who is currently 52 years old, first appeared on Dr. Dre's album titled The Chronic in 1992. The album's name is a colloquial term for premium cannabis.

Throughout time, his song words have included various allusions to the addiction.

In his solo track "Gin and Juice," he rapped about smoking an ounce. The song "The Next Episode," which he collaborated with Dr. Dre on and was featured as the opener for the 2022 Super Bowl half-time show, contained the lyrics "Smoke weed every day."

Back in 2013, during an interview with GQ magazine, the artist admitted to consuming an astonishing amount of 80 marijuana joints per day.

Snoop Dogg formed Leafs By Snoop after two years. The enterprise focuses on creating unique types of marijuana, extracts, buds, and food products.

A few enthusiasts proposed that the celebrity's alleged choice to resign might have been based on health reasons.

On Instagram, someone shared that they suffered from a pulmonary embolism in the previous year and had to quit smoking as a result.

"I understand how challenging it can be to make this change, particularly for someone in your situation. You can take as much time as you require."

Another person commented, "I stopped smoking a few months ago and I have gained a lot of clarity since then. Well done, uncle!"

On a particular day, a different admirer proposed that Snoop was not entirely quitting drugs.

"He's opting for edible consumption, giving his respiratory system some break. Enjoy eating, my champion."

According to Frank, an advisory service in the United Kingdom that provides information on drug use, using marijuana excessively can heighten the possibility of developing lung cancer.

Individuals who use the drug regularly for a prolonged period may also encounter manifestations such as uneasiness, distrust, difficulty sleeping, decrease in appetite or vision and hearing things that aren't actually present. In addition, there is an augmented probability of developing schizophrenia caused by consuming the drug.

The BBC has reached out to the people who work for Snoop Dogg to find out more about what he said, but they haven't answered back yet.
