Wednesday ease relegation fears with Plymouth win

Sheffield Wednesday

Djeidi Gassama marked his third goal of the season with a celebration.

Sheffield Wednesday's struggle to avoid being relegated from the Championship became more intense after they secured a 1-0 victory over Plymouth Argyle, who are also fighting to stay in the league.

The home team, Ian Poveda, scored a goal that was invalidated due to being offside, 20 minutes into the game. Ike Ugbo nearly scored for the Owls, but the first half ended with no goals.

Djeidi Gassama scored the first goal of the match by tapping in a cross from Ugbo on the right side. He almost scored a second goal shortly after.

Argyle found it difficult to generate any significant opportunities as they were unable to score in a match for the fourth time in five competitions.

The team earned their fifth win out of six games on Wednesday, which keeps them in second-to-last place, but the important part is that they now have the same number of points as the three teams ranked just above them. This is a result of their ongoing improvement under the leadership of Danny Rohl.

Argyle still has a lead of 2 points over the Owls and is currently placed 16th in the lower part of the table, which has many teams closely competing.

On Wednesday, there were some great opportunities during the game. Ugbo attempted a shot in the ninth minute, but the goalkeeper, Conor Hazard, made a good save. Poveda also took part in an excellent move, leading to a chance to score. However, a linesman flagged the play as being offside, despite very close calls displayed on video replays.

Ashely Phillips missed the target for Argyle shortly after, whereas James Beadle prevented a shot from Mickel Miller for Pilgrims towards the end of the first half.

Argyle's team will feel disappointed with the beginning of Wednesday's match. This is because Adam Forshaw lost possession of the ball when they were near their goal area. Because of this mistake, Ugo was able to advance with the ball and pass it to Gassama. Gassama took a shot and although Hazard tried to block it, it still went in the goal.

Gassama missed an opportunity to score again only a couple of minutes later, as his long-range shot went wide. Meanwhile, James Beadle made a great save to stop Morgan Whittaker's decent chance at the opposite end of the pitch.

Towards the end of the game, the Pilgrims had a few opportunities for Mustapha Bundu to score, however, they were unable to find the back of the net.

While speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Ian Foster, the head coach of Plymouth Argyle, stated that...

We were really upset because we felt like we shouldn't have lost that game."

It's quite regrettable how the goal happened. Adam unintentionally made an error when he didn't clear the ball, and sadly for him, he slipped up, allowing the other team to score during the counter-attack.

During the second half, the team had an impeccable strategy. They dominated the game and it's unbelievable that we ended up losing.
