Sheff Wed win at QPR to boost survival hopes
Djeidi Gassama entered the game as a substitute and managed to score a goal for Sheffield Wednesday.
Sheffield Wednesday secured a major win in their battle to avoid relegation from the Championship, thanks to goals from substitutes Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba. The match was played away at Queens Park Rangers.
Isaac Hayden tried to clear the ball but unfortunately it bounced off Gassama, a former player of Paris St-Germain, and went into the net, resulting in a goal for the Owls.
After that, Gassama became the one who created the opportunity as he passed the ball to Musaba to hit a powerful shot which went past Asmir Begovic.
Lucas Andersen tried to score a goal but hit the crossbar instead. However, QPR was unable to beat James Beadle at Loftus Road.
After their recent win, Wednesday has closed the gap on Huddersfield, who currently stand in 21st place, to just one point. On the other hand, QPR is still in danger and is only four points away from falling into the relegation zone.
If the Hoops had won the game, they would have almost certainly secured a place in the Championship football next season. However, the Owls were able to score a late goal and take all three points, just like they did in their previous match at Hillsborough.
Chris Willock and Sinclair Armstrong attempted shots in the beginning of the game for the home team, but were unsuccessful in posing a challenge to Beadle, who was guarding Wednesday's net.
The energetic Ian Poveda sent a pass into the QPR penalty area towards Josh Windass who had a favorable position, but unfortunately, he didn't manage to put the ball into the net.
Poveda exited the game due to injury and Gassama stepped in before half-time. He almost made a sudden contribution by sprinting past the defending Hoops but missed his shot at goal.
Wednesday found themselves lucky to take the lead, as Gassama skillfully weaved his way past defenders and reached the edge of the field before passing the ball into the box.
Hayden's shot went directly towards Gassama and ricocheted off him, ultimately ending up in the goal.
QPR nearly scored a goal shortly after when their Danish midfielder Andersen took a shot, which hit the crossbar as Beadle, the opposing team's goalkeeper, couldn't stop it.
Armstrong moved forward towards the end of the match while the Hoops were trying to even the score.
However, the visitors had a flawless afternoon as Musaba's precise goal in the sixth minute of extra time sealed the deal.
Danny Rohl, the manager of Sheffield Wednesday, stated in an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield:
I witnessed a substantial response from my squad. My aim was to observe a team that is battling for this club without pondering excessively about what may happen later on.
In previous instances, certain athletes demonstrated that they were unprepared for this particular challenge, but today, I witnessed a group of players who were adequately equipped and prepared.
We modified the form and I swapped out five players.
"Gassama demonstrated his worth and significance by exhibiting his fighting prowess, which was truly impressive."
In an interview with BBC Radio London, Marti Cifuentes, the manager of QPR, shared his thoughts.
Today has been a letdown and I acknowledge my responsibility for my team's results. Regrettably, we did not achieve the performance we aimed for.
Maybe we had more opportunities that were obvious compared to them, but they succeeded in scoring two goals, which is ultimately what counts in football.
The initial 60/70 minutes were subpar, indicating that we may have required yielding a goal to snap out of it and realize the significance of the match.
Everyone knows that unfortunately, having 46 points won't be sufficient to avoid getting relegated and the truth is that there are still several matches left to be played, therefore we must ensure that we perform outstandingly.
