St. Mirren defender Shaun Rooney faces charges for allegedly attacking a woman and disturbing the peace in an incident involving a man at a takeaway in Glasgow city center.

The Scottish Premiership team announced on Thursday that the 28-year-old player had been put on suspension as a "precaution" after he informed his superiors about the alleged incident.

In a statement, the Paisley club promised to carry out a thorough investigation and mentioned that it would refrain from making any additional remarks during this time.

On Friday, Police Scotland announced that Rooney had been taken into custody and faced charges. He is scheduled to appear at the local sheriff court at a future date.

Authorities reported that a 28-year-old man has been detained and is facing charges related to an attack on an 18-year-old woman as well as a disturbance involving an 18-year-old man at a takeaway location on Queen Street in Glasgow during the early hours of Thursday, September 19, 2024.

He was let go with the promise that he would come back to the Glasgow Sheriff Court on a future date.

"A report will be sent to the Public Prosecutor."

Rooney started off in the youth program at Dundee United and has gone on to play for several clubs, including Dunfermline Athletic, Inverness Caledonian Thistle, and St Johnstone.

He made his way back to Scottish football this summer after spending two years at Fleetwood Town in Lancashire, England, where Scott Brown, the former Celtic captain, served as manager for a time.
