Scotland v Hungary: Pick of the stats

Scotland v Hungary

This will be the first time Scotland and Hungary face each other in a competition. In their previous nine matches, they played in friendly games with Scotland winning three times, Hungary winning four times, and two matches ending in a draw.

Scotland has emerged victorious in two out of the last three encounters with Hungary, suffering a single loss in between. This match marks their first face-off since their 1-0 triumph on Hungarian soil in March 2018.

Scotland is hoping to advance to the knockout rounds of the European Championship for the very first time. Even though they have only won two out of their 11 group games at Euros (with three draws and six losses), those two victories both happened on matchday three: against CIS in 1992 (3-0) and Switzerland in 1996 (1-0).

Hungary has not won any of their matches at Euro 2024, with defeats against Germany and Switzerland. This is only the third time they have lost all their games at a major tournament, with previous occurrences at Euro 1972 and the 1978 World Cup.

In their recent match against Switzerland, Scotland fielded a team with a total of 470 international appearances, which is the most they have ever had. Additionally, it was the first time they had five players in the starting lineup with over 50 caps each - McTominay (51), Hanley (52), McGregor (62), McGinn (68), and Robertson (73).

Hungary has not been very successful in their recent matches against European countries in major tournaments. They have only managed to win one out of their last 17 games, with 5 ending in a draw and 11 in a loss. Their only victory came against Austria, with a 2-0 win during Euro 2016.

Except for goals scored by the opposing team, all six goal scorers representing Scotland at the European Championships have surnames that begin with Mc. In 1992, McStay, McClair, and McAllister scored goals, followed by McCoist in 1996, McGregor in 2020, and McTominay in 2024. Interestingly, all four assists for these goals have been provided by players with surnames starting with Mc (McPherson, McCoist, McAllister, McGregor).

Hungary has not won a UEFA EURO match in their last eight games (D4 L4) – only Russia has had a longer streak without a win in the competition, going winless for 9 games from 1988 to 2004 (including matches as Soviet Union/CIS).

Starting from 2023, Scott McTominay has scored eight goals in 10 official matches for Scotland. That's only one goal less than all the other Scottish players combined during that period. McTominay has also taken four out of Scotland's 13 shots in Euro 2024 and has made eight out of their 27 touches in the opponent's box.
