Ryan Gosling transforms into bookish school teacher turned astronaut as he films science fiction...

His diverse array of characters includes quirky individuals like a reclusive outsider, a history teacher struggling with addiction to crack, the astronaut who was the first to walk on the moon, and lately, the iconic Ken Doll from Mattel, who continues to capture popular interest.

However, Ryan Gosling appeared somewhat more low-key as he worked on his new project in the rainy weather at South Parade Pier in Southsea on Sunday.

The 43-year-old American actor braved the weather in a yellow raincoat while filming alongside a co-actor in a seaside town in Hampshire.

Ryan portrays Ryland Grace, a scholarly teacher who becomes an astronaut, in the upcoming sci-fi movie Project Hail Mary. This film is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, which shares the same title.

Wearing his character's striped shirt, burgundy tie, and round glasses, the actor appeared calm and at ease as he chatted with the production crew during breaks between scenes.

Ryan Gosling was seen talking with a co-star while shooting Project Hail Mary amidst the rainy weather at South Parade Pier in Southsea on Sunday.

The Barbie actor braved the weather in a yellow raincoat during the stormy beach scenes.

Later, he was spotted with a phone in his hand, using a set of wired earbuds to listen to something.

His arrival sparked a buzz among the locals, with numerous film trucks and vans stationed close by. Crowds gathered in hopes of catching a sight of the actor.

He has been discussing his leading role and producer position for the film for more than four years, which comes after the adaptation of another novel by Weir, The Martian.

The book was turned into a highly acclaimed and profitable movie featuring Matt Damon, which earned $630 million at the box office, as reported by Box Office Mojo.

According to the synopsis on IMDB, the movie takes place in the near future and follows Ryland Grace, a junior high school teacher who has become an astronaut. After falling into a coma, he awakens with no memory of his past.

He slowly starts to recall that he was dispatched to the Tau Ceti solar system, located 12 light-years away from Earth, with the mission of discovering a way to reverse a solar dimming event that threatens to wipe out humanity.

It is said that Project Hail Mary will be launched on May 20, 2026.

MGM has acquired the new project in a deal that is said to be worth seven figures, with Ryan expected to produce it alongside Ken Kao.

He put the vibrant piece of clothing on top of a blue and white striped shirt, paired with a brown tweed jacket.

To complete his outfit, Ryan added a splash of color with a burgundy tie and paired it with round glasses for a stylish touch.

In the footage, Ryan was spotted with a phone in hand, attentively listening through a set of wired earbuds. Shortly after, he was seen embracing his co-star, whose identity has not yet been revealed.

The movie revolves around an astronaut assigned the mission of saving our planet. It was penned by Andy Weir, who previously found success with his novel The Martian, which starred Matt Damon. It premiered alongside Damien Chazelle's work in 2018.

Project Hail Mary seems like a perfect fit for Ryan, especially since he previously portrayed a more introspective and solitary Neil Armstrong in the film First Man.

While the film received positive reviews from critics, who praised his performance, it didn't attract a large audience.

Before that, the La La Land star took the lead in the ambitious sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Critics lauded the film for its breathtaking visuals and his subtle yet moving performance.

However, the movie did not succeed in earning back its production costs, which could be attributed to its long duration and the reality that the original 1982 film featuring Harrison Ford was not a commercial success at the time, despite being viewed as a beloved classic today.

Since his Oscar-winning success with La La Land, Ryan has appeared in only one other film: the controversial indie drama Song To Song. In this project, he shared the screen with Rooney Mara and Michael Fassbender, working under the renowned director Terrence Malick.

The movie is probably right up Ryan's alley since he played the introspective and solitary Neil Armstrong in the 2018 film First Man (see the still from First Man).

Ryan's work on Project Hail Mary will mark his first time in charge of a production since his unfortunate directorial debut, Lost River, in 2014, which has a low rating of 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Project Hail Mary is expected to be Andy Weir's third major adaptation.

The filmmaking team of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, famous for their work on The Lego Movie, is now adapting Artemis, the science fiction novel that serves as a follow-up to The Martian, which was released in 2017.

Deadline reported in November that their production company is working on an original concept from the writer, along with a graphic novel.
