Roy Keane jokes as future son-in-law Harwood-Bellis scores for England
Roy Keane humorously remarked that his daughter's engagement to Taylor Harwood-Bellis is “not finalized” after the Southampton defender found the net in his first game for England against the Republic of Ireland.
Harwood-Bellis is set to marry Leah, the daughter of Keane, but he annoyed his future father-in-law by scoring the last goal in England's impressive 5-0 victory against Ireland.
He scored just 17 minutes after stepping onto the field for his first game, making it an unforgettable evening at Wembley for the 22-year-old.
Keane, who represented Ireland 67 times from 1991 to 2005, shared his thoughts while analyzing a match for ITV: "This is a mixed feeling for me. It's not all settled yet—things can shift quickly in the Keane family, trust me on that. Recently, he's shown he can score, even during his time at Southampton, which is great for him."
"It’s beneficial for him to make his first appearance. As I mentioned, he has the potential to score. He’s a great kid, and his family has raised him well. Overall, he’s just a really nice person."
At the same time, Heimir Hallgrímsson was extremely upset about his team's embarrassing 5-0 defeat at Wembley. He indicated that his players “threw in the towel” after Liam Scales was red-carded.
“I’m at a bit of a loss for words,” the manager of the Republic of Ireland commented after the penalty call and the red card led to England scoring three goals in just six minutes. “It was really chaotic for those six minutes. It was surprising to give away a penalty, then a goal, and to lose a player too. We probably lost our focus during that time, which contributed to the second and third goals. After that, it was clear that we may have lost our composure and given in.”
"We’ve discussed this, and I mentioned earlier that we're having issues with confidence. The way things unfolded seemed to strip away the confidence we built in the first half. It’s hard to put into words; it's just something that happened suddenly, like a wake-up call, and it was tough to recover from."
