Daniel Brown had an unforgettable first appearance in a major championship. He made two birdies in the last three holes on Thursday at the British Open, finishing with a 6-under 65. There were still some spectators remaining at Royal Troon in the evening, and they were there to cheer him on.
He took the lead with one shot ahead of Shane Lowry, who shot a 66 without any bogeys and had his best beginning in 46 major tournaments.
Lowry had prior knowledge of the challenging conditions caused by the unexpected wind at Troon, unlike many others. He visited Troon two weeks ago and anticipated the conditions, which ultimately benefitted him greatly.
Brown turned out to be the unexpected surprise.
Having only won once on the European tour, he came to Royal Troon after not making it past the cut in seven consecutive tournaments since March. However, he had a couple of decent performances leading up to the event. One was during the final qualifying round where he earned a spot in his first major tournament. The other was at the Scottish Open where he not only made the cut, but finished in 61st place.
However, the focus of the day was on the strong wind. It was powerful and unrelenting, creating a challenging playing environment throughout the entire round. Instead of relying on the wind for favorable scoring conditions on the front nine and maintaining composure on the back nine, players were faced with difficult conditions from beginning to end.
Rory McIlroy experienced the same difficulty, shooting a 78 with two double bogeys. Bryson DeChambeau, the U.S. Open champion, had a tough round too, scoring a 76 after starting with a 42. Tiger Woods, at 48, struggled as well with a 78, his highest start in a major since the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay where he shot an 80.
Lowry cruised effortlessly, playing just as well as he has been all year, enjoying the enthusiastic cheers from the crowd while keeping in mind that it was just one day. He was well aware of what to anticipate.
Luckily, I arrived here two weeks ago and experienced this wind on the second day of my visit. I had the opportunity to see the golf course in various wind conditions. It seems like my decision to do so has paid off today. Below are the tee times for round two at the Ayrshire course:
