Rory McIlroy, a golfer with four major championship wins, has taken steps to end his marriage with his current wife, Erica. The legal action was initiated in a family court located in Palm Beach County, Florida.
After reports of his separation made the rounds, Rory McIlroy's manager, Sean O'Flaherty, has confirmed that the golfer and his spouse are splitting up. McIlroy, who is currently taking part in the PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Club, is 35 years old.
The statement from Rory McIlroy's team confirmed that he has filed for a divorce, according to O'Flaherty. The team emphasized that Rory wishes for the divorce process to be respectful and friendly. Rory has decided not to provide further information on the matter.
McIlroy and his spouse share a delightful 3-year-old girl named Poppy.
McIlroy's spouse, formerly known as Erica Stoll, was introduced to him during the 2012 Ryder Cup. They began their romantic relationship two years following McIlroy's separation from tennis player Caroline Wozniacki.
In 2017, McIlroy and Stoll tied the knot in Ireland.
The lawyers of McIlroy stated in their submitted court document, which ESPN has acquired a duplicate of, that the marriage between him and his spouse is beyond repair. They are seeking joint custody of their child and for a legal expert to guarantee the imposition of a premarital contract entered into by the pair on the seventh day of March in 2017.
The cause for the separation was not immediately clear. The legal request to end the marriage was submitted in a private manner.
The legal representative of McIlroy is Thomas J. Sasser, who previously acted as the lawyer for Tiger Woods when he separated from his former spouse, Elin Nordegren, in 2010.
