What really happened on the ground in Rishi Sunak's constituency, Richmond and Northallerton, on election night? Tatler's insider reveals all…

Rishi Sunak constituency

Some people at the leisure center are feeling unsure as we wait outside with tensions running high. Sir Archibald Stanton, the candidate for the Monster Raving Loony Party in the constituency, appears to be one of the most excited about the results. I run into him in the town center at The Buck Inn, passing the time as the votes are being tallied. He is wearing a red suit and top hat adorned with black bats. A life-size stuffed tiger sits to his left, while Gilly, a ventriloquist puppet, is on his right, being introduced as 'our next party leader' by Archibald. The exit poll result comes as no surprise to him.

It is almost 4 in the morning and the Labour Party is winning by a large margin. Two grey Range Rovers slowly turn the corner and drive towards the leisure centre. It's Rishi. A security guard comments, "We are seeing something historic happening."

After about 45 minutes, it came as a shock to everyone in the room when it was announced that Rishi had managed to hold onto his seat. The security guards and two police officers, who had gathered around a phone to watch the live broadcast with us, let out a collective gasp. The two Range Rovers pulled out of the car park, carrying Rishi who was still the leader of the Yorkshire area but no longer of the entire United Kingdom.

It's a speedy departure for the remaining guests who have witnessed the outcomes and kept track in real time. They are fed up, and so am I.
