Wimbledon 2024: Emma Raducanu left ‘more determined’ after fourth round run at SW19

Emma Raducanu recovered from a minor injury worry in her fourth round game at Wimbledon but couldn't beat an impressive display from qualifier Lulu Sun.

Raducanu fought tough to push the match to a final set against the player ranked at No.123 from New Zealand. However, Sun managed to win 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 to advance to her first-ever Grand Slam quarter-final.

The young woman from Britain, who is 21 years old, fell hard at the beginning of the third set and had to pause the match to receive medical attention for her injured leg and back. After getting treated, she returned to the court to continue playing.

"I've been dealing with a sore back since yesterday," Raducanu mentioned during her post-match press conference.

I believe it was blown out of proportion today, I would say. I noticed it while playing the match. I believe it was particularly impacting my serve.

I put in my best effort that day. Now, I just need to learn from the experience, review it, make improvements, and move forward.

However, let's not diminish Sun's incredible performance. She played remarkably well as a qualifier, hitting an impressive 52 winners against the 2021 US Open champion in her debut on Centre Court.

"It was a tough game," Raducanu stated. "I believe Lulu played excellent tennis today. I put forth my best effort, fought with all I had. I think her tennis was superior today and she deserved the victory."

"She was quite assertive. She was able to control the game and I find it difficult to play against a left-handed opponent - it's something new for me. In the future, I should probably practice more against lefties."

Raducanu said that she didn't expect to do well in the tournament, but now she is happy to be back in the top 100 in the WTA rankings.

"I defeated two players ranked in the top 10 in just two weeks, which was a significant achievement for me. During the entire US Open event, I didn't face any top-10 players, so this gives me a boost in confidence."

Half a year ago, when I was just recovering from surgery, I would have been grateful for reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon. It's only natural to feel disappointed, and of course, I desire to achieve more. I believe that everything occurs for a purpose.

"It just strengthens my resolve. I've been prioritizing myself a lot lately. Tennis is the main focus of my attention and energy. It's the only thing I really care about."

I feel like my passion and motivation have returned. I am eager to continue growing and progressing.

I believe I will take a short break to rejuvenate my body. The past few days have been physically demanding.

I am positive about the future. I have a hopeful outlook. I am just putting in the effort and moving in the right path.
