France will face Spain in the semi-finals of Euro 2024 after winning a penalty shootout against Portugal in their quarter-final match in Hamburg.

The game lacked a lot of good offensive plays near the goal. Both teams missed many opportunities to score, thanks to the goalkeepers Mike Maignan and Diogo Costa making some great saves. Maignan stopped Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha from scoring close to the goal, while Costa did a good job stopping Kylian Mbappe from being a threat.

The match between the teams ended in a tie after playing for 120 minutes, so they had to decide the winner through a penalty shootout. Cristiano Ronaldo scored the first penalty for Portugal, but the French team was perfect in their shots. Unfortunately, Joao Felix of Portugal hit the post with his shot, giving France the upper hand. A fantastic goal by Theo Hernandez secured their victory with a score of 5-3.

Portugal's Talent Hindered By Ronaldo In Disappointing Euro 2024 Exit

Ronaldo participated in his final European Championships where Portugal's lack of scoring ultimately led to their elimination. In a disappointing end, Joao Felix missed his penalty shot, hitting the post, while the rest of the team successfully scored. This loss marked Portugal's second consecutive draw after going 364 minutes without a goal.

No French player has scored a goal during regular play in this tournament, which is also concerning. However, in a shootout, five players managed to score for France. In the previous round, Diogo Costa saved three penalty kicks from Slovenia. Ousmane Dembele, Youssouf Fofana, Jules Kounde, and Bradley Barcola all scored, leading to Theo Hernandez setting up a powerful semi-final match against Spain.

Didier Deschamps has shown that sometimes boring tactics can lead to successful results, as France has reached their fourth semi-final in the last five major tournaments. This achievement also helped them overcome past disappointments, such as being eliminated from Euro 2020 on penalties and losing the 2022 World Cup final in a shootout. Additionally, France was able to avenge their loss to Portugal in the Euro 2016 final.

Harry Kane Thinks England Win Is Best Gift For Southgate

The England team's captain, Harry Kane, says that the players are determined to mark Gareth Southgate's 100th game as manager with a win against Switzerland and a spot in the semi-finals of Euro 2024. They want to give him the best present possible.

Southgate is set to make history as only the third coach to reach 100 matches in charge of the England men's senior team when they face off against Switzerland in Dusseldorf this Saturday evening.

He was chosen to lead the team in 2016, starting as a temporary leader. This is now the fourth significant competition under Southgate's leadership. He had previously guided the team to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, but unfortunately lost the Euro 2020 final to Italy in a penalty shootout.

Gareth Southgate Focused On Swiss Showdown, Not 100th Match

Gareth Southgate rejected the idea that England has an easy draw, calling it unfair entitlement. He is concentrating on making it to another semi-final in the European Championship in his 100th game as manager.

Everyone will be watching Dusseldorf this Saturday as the second-place team from Euro 2020 tries to defeat Switzerland. They are looking to build on their somewhat unimpressive performance in the group stage and last week's dramatic win against Slovakia.

Southgate was close to ending his eight-year reign in shame, but Jude Bellingham's spectacular overhead kick and Harry Kane's header in extra time saved the day, leading to a 2-1 victory in the last-16 match.

Arsenal's Clash Determines England-Switzerland Euro 2024

Similar to many of his fellow players from different countries, Declan Rice hasn't been performing as well as usual in Euro 2024. He hasn't been able to move forward with the ball as much as he usually does. He is winning fewer one-on-one battles per game, not succeeding as often in aerial challenges, and losing possession more frequently than he did while playing in the Premier League with Arsenal.

Certainly, there is another distinction to take into consideration. The comparisons mentioned above may be insightful, but ultimately they are not significant. It is important to recognize that he is not performing the same duties for England as he does for Arsenal. Therefore, expecting him to achieve the same results in both roles is unrealistic.

It appears that this summer, there is a common theme among the England national team players. Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold usually play as right-backs for their clubs, but they are not part of the England squad. Phil Foden is playing on the other side of the field. Ezri Konsa has only played in a defensive position that he is not accustomed to. As for Rice, even though his natural position is central midfield, he is being asked to play different roles and follow different instructions. Instead of having a safety net behind him, he is often the safety net for the team.

Although it may not be necessary to talk too much about players who can only perform in one way or position on the field, it does raise questions about why certain players are chosen over others, and why a specific strategy is used if it's not benefiting any of them.

In the blink of an eye, the spotlight fades away, the curtains close, and the impressive performance concludes. It's not just the end of Germany's journey in Euro 2024, but also the farewell of one of their most celebrated stars in recent times, a legendary midfielder who has left a lasting impact on the game.

Toni Kroos ended his club career on a high note, winning the Champions League and delivering an outstanding performance. However, his final appearance at the international level was not as successful. Despite being known for his great passing skills, he was unable to match the skill and dominance of Spain in poise, possession, and most importantly, penetration.

Some people were shocked by Kroos' choice as the tournament continued. He performed exceptionally well in the group stage, clearly standing out from the competition multiple times.

At the age of 34, he is still an important player, as he performed exceptionally well with Real Madrid and was convinced to come out of retirement to play a crucial role by Julian Nagelsmann.

However, there won't be a final match this time, no perfect goodbye moment. Kroos' 114th appearance is his final one, and sadly for Germany, it was one of his least impactful performances.

Title: Reflecting on my Journey It's been quite the experience looking back on how far I've come. I can't believe all that I've achieved in such a short amount of time. From where I started to where I am now, it's truly amazing to see the progress I've made. Every step of this journey has taught me something new and helped me grow as a person. I've faced challenges, overcome obstacles, and learned valuable lessons along the way. I wouldn't change any of it, as it has made me who I am today. As I continue on this path, I am excited to see what the future holds. I know there will be more challenges and more obstacles to overcome, but I am confident that I have the strength and determination to face whatever comes my way. Here's to reflecting on my journey and looking forward to all that lies ahead.

Dani Olmo Shines As Spain Loses To Germany In Euro 2024

Here are the scores that the players received in the game that was played earlier.

The beginning of the game was filled with fouls and players getting booked rather than exciting offensive plays. Kai Havertz missed the best opportunity to score, while Pedri had to leave the game because of an injury. Three players were given yellow cards, but Toni Kroos managed to avoid getting one.

However, the second part of the match was much more thrilling, especially after some impressive plays by Lamine Yamal led to Dani Olmo scoring a goal past Manuel Neuer in the 51st minute. This goal added excitement to the game, with Germany starting to play better and both teams getting opportunities to score.

The hosts appeared to be losing the competition until Florian Wirtz struck a half-volley off the post and into the Spanish goal, and the highly anticipated final match was now going into overtime.

In the final half-hour, both teams exchanged attacks, but neither was able to dominate offensively. Then Carvajal made a great pass to Olmo, who sent a perfect cross to Merino. Merino scored with a beautiful header, securing Spain's spot in the semi-finals.

So how did each player do? Below are the player scores from The Independent.

Spain's Thrilling Euro 2024 Victory Over Germany May Have Consequences

Germany didn't get their second summer fairytale as Spain emerged victorious. Mikel Merino scored a brilliant header in the 119th minute to secure the win. The real question now is what the consequences of this 2-1 victory over the hosts will be for Spain's chances in Euro 2024. Toni Kroos' farewell didn't go as planned, as the match was often contentious.

This game didn't turn out to be the standout match of the tournament as expected, but it was incredibly intense until the very end. The game went on for a long time, showing how physically and mentally demanding it can be. These types of games can make it difficult for teams to win championships due to the toll it takes on players. Now, Spain will be without Alvaro Morata and Dani Carvajal for the semi-final due to suspensions, and Pedri may be injured for the rest of the summer. Pedri was injured early in the game by a tough challenge from Kroos, setting the tone for a tough match.

During the European Championships, Spain once again demonstrated a quality that they have already shown many times before. They showed great determination and never gave up, facing a tough German team and overcoming their own challenges.

Southgate's Euro 2024 Dilemma For England's Legacy

A quick sneak peek into the upcoming England match tomorrow, followed by a discussion about the outcome of today's other game.

Right before the quarter-final match of Euro 2024 for England, Gareth Southgate was faced with one last decision to make. He had been focusing on using a back three formation throughout the week, but now Luke Shaw was available to play. Southgate mentioned the importance of considering Shaw's match sharpness and ability to adjust to the intensity of the tournament, which could also impact their formation choice.

Having Shaw playing as a left-back would allow the manager to set up his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation as he intended. Having a natural left-footer in that position could have a significant impact on the team.

Southgate downplayed the importance of the formation, emphasizing the ability to adapt during games. He mentioned the use of a four-man defense and shifting to a five when defending. This could have been a strategy to keep things unclear for others, particularly after being frustrated by leaks about working on a three-man defense. His remarks about Shaw and formation added to the confusion.

There could be more to it than just psychological tactics, as Switzerland coach Murat Yakin emphasized the significance of formations following their victory over Italy in the round of 16.

Cristiano Ronaldo And Kylian Mbappe Disappoint In Portugal Vs France Euro 2024 Clash

The top teams had a match that ended in a tie with no goals scored after playing for 120 minutes in Hamburg. The game became more exciting as it continued, even though it started off slowly.

However, neither team was able to create a crucial opportunity, as Cristiano Ronaldo was mostly unnoticed and Kylian Mbappe had to leave the game in extra time due to some discomfort with his mask.

Joao Felix's missed shot in the shootout gave France the upper hand, allowing Theo Hernandez to score and advance Les Bleus to the semifinals. They will face Spain on Tuesday, July 9th.

But how well did each player do? Here are the ratings from The Independent:
