Yesterday in London, Mescal stopped by the Capital Breakfast studios to chat about everything related to Gladiator II. He was wearing his favorite Handball Spezials, especially in the 'Core Black' color.
The Handball Spezial was launched in 1979 and was initially created for professional handball players who relied on it for their careers. Over time, as new and improved versions emerged, it transitioned into a popular lifestyle sneaker. “Today, the Adidas Handball Spezial is definitely well-known; it's already trending on TikTok,” remarks Jake Woolf from GQ. “However, it hasn't become as ubiquitous as the Samba or Gazelle just yet.”
Absolutely! The Handball Spezial does take some cues from its football-inspired counterparts, but it's definitely more refined and polished. The gum rubber sole has a distinct wedge design that provides incredible comfort. Plus, Paul Mescal's sneakers are made entirely from ultra-soft pigskin nubuck. Even after being used for a while and showing signs of wear, they still look fantastic.
