According to National Highways, the motorway became congested in both directions between junctions five (Sevenoaks) and six (Godstone) just before 1:00 PM BST on Thursday.

According to Inrix, the traffic data provider, delays have increased up to junction four (Orpington) on the clockwise route.

As of 5:50 PM, the road heading in the clockwise direction remained closed, while the road going in the opposite direction had been opened again.

Earlier today, National Highways reported that drivers traveling in the anti-clockwise direction were experiencing delays of two hours, while those going clockwise could face disruptions of up to 90 minutes.

In the meantime, Inrix reported that the M26 in Kent was shut down in both directions between the M20 and the M25; however, the lane headed towards the coast has now reopened.

Traffic was also heavy on the A25 as it passes through Chipstead, Oxted, and Westerham, with vehicles traveling in the opposite direction backed up all the way to the M23.

Motorists were advised to anticipate slowdowns in the vicinity and seek out other ways to travel.
