Six things that stand out for me in Liz Truss book - Chris Mason

Liz Truss

The BBC News' political editor reported on current events in the political sphere.

Over the past few weeks, I have been engrossed in reading the latest literary work of the former British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, entitled Ten Years to Save the West.

I received a copy beforehand to get ready for my chat with her, and you can catch the interview on BBC iPlayer or tune in on BBC Sounds.

This writing piece contains around 100,000 words which is the maximum length.

You might have already come across some of the things she said that are receiving media attention.

Here are some other things that caught my attention.

According to Ms Truss, the Conservative movement in Western countries has been struggling for almost 20 years.

According to her, the Western world has lost its vigor and become too self-satisfied. She believes that some conservative politicians have started to adopt radical environmentalist beliefs and the trend of being "woke".

The blog post claims that there are members of the Conservative Party who hold leftist beliefs. Additionally, the post argues that the Conservative Party has not shown enough determination to reverse certain policies put in place by the previous Labour government, namely the Human Rights Act.

According to the ex-Prime Minister, there are certain members of the Tory party who she believes are only Conservative in name, or in other words, they do not truly uphold Conservative values.

According to her, the environmental discussion is the most significant case of Conservatives conceding to the Left in recent years. She also asserts that many environmentalists are "watermelons," which means they appear green on the outside but hold socialist beliefs on the inside.

In her perspective, the most significant danger to the planet is the emergence of authoritarian governances.

'Power Of Experts: Technocracy's Tyranny'

The book emphasizes on a significant topic. The author believes that there are excessively many people in authority, and they possess immense power without enough responsibility.

She holds the Bank of England Governor, Andrew Bailey, partially responsible for her downfall as the prime minister and desires his removal. However, Mr. Bailey has chosen not to react to her accusations.

She plans to eliminate the autonomous financial predictor known as the Office for Budget Responsibility.

She plans to withdraw the UK from being a member of the European Convention on Human Rights.

"Truss: Too Many Govt. Workers Are Political Activists"

She stated that individuals who advocate for the environment should obtain employment at the Environment Department, and those who promote equality should obtain employment at the Government Equalities Office.

As a result, we are now seeing activists taking on roles as public officials, which was not common before and may pose significant challenges.

"Truss Criticizes Overly Generous Furlough"

She states that this results in the economy being stagnant, with little motivation for individuals to adapt to the evolving world by creating fresh and inventive enterprises.

Judicial 'Snobbery'

Liz Truss declared that her period in the position of justice secretary transformed her perspective significantly.

In casual language: She wrote that the court system is like a group of powerful people who keep their power to themselves. She was surprised by how snobby they were.

She plans to get rid of the Supreme Court completely. Additionally, she wants to take apart the process of the Judicial Appointments Commission.

To put it briefly, she believes that elected politicians should have the authority to choose judicial appointees.

Being Honest About Personal Shortcomings

According to her statement, during her time as justice secretary, she acted in an awkward way.

"I enjoy being with people and I am sociable, but even my closest companions wouldn't classify me as an excellent team leader," she expresses, noting that she typically communicates in a straightforward manner.

No matter what your opinion is about Liz Truss, if you enjoy political concepts and debates, this piece is a stimulating and entertaining piece to read.

She provides straightforward responses to explicit inquiries.

There are individuals who will always hold a grudge against her for her tenure as the head of government.

There are several individuals who belong to the Conservative party, many of whom hold high-ranking positions.

The Labour party is thrilled that she is active once more. They believe that her presence in numerous interviews is tremendously beneficial for their objective.

If you tend to doubt things and are questioning why this person should be paid attention to, I think it's important to scrutinize all previous leaders of a country.

Her voice is still heard and holds a great influence among her fellow party members. In private, many Conservatives expect to not win the election and are contemplating what their future may hold after it.

At the ending part of the book, the ex-prime minister expressed in writing that making compromises and using triangulation can lead to a bad situation or decision.

Nobody could blame her for that.
