Liz Truss leaves stage over ‘I crashed the economy’ lettuce banner
Liz Truss quickly exited the stage during an event where she was promoting her book after protesters displayed a banner criticizing her role in the economy downturn, featuring a lettuce.
The ex-leader, who held the position for just 45 days, was in Suffolk talking about the US presidential election on Tuesday when the activist group Led By Donkeys used a remote-controlled device to lower a large banner with a picture of a lettuce behind her.
Truss was sitting comfortably on the stage wearing a vibrant green dress, openly backing Donald Trump before falling victim to a prank. She declared her support for Trump, stating, "I want him to be victorious," as the crowd cheered for her. "I was talking a bit about those who are currently in office. I believe the average American is struggling..."
She mentioned, "I believe it was one of Bill Clinton's advisors who once said, 'It's the economy, stupid.' So I think he [Trump] has a good chance of winning. By the way, I have a lot of questions about Trump."
A short time later, the host expressed confusion, stating that he was unaware of the source of the comment. This prompted laughter from some audience members. The woman responded by muttering that the situation was not humorous, removing the microphone from her outfit, and exiting the stage. As she walked away, she received applause from a portion of the audience.
The idea of the lettuce and joke came about during the last days of Truss's time as Prime Minister. The Daily Star started a live stream of a lettuce to see if Truss could stay in office longer than a 60p iceberg lettuce from Tesco.
Truss was attempting to advertise her book, Ten Years to Save the West, when Led by Donkeys posted on social media: "We recently visited Liz Truss's pro-Trump event with a lettuce banner flown by a remote control. She did not appreciate the humor."
Truss recently spoke out about US politics, urging Republican supporters to take note of her experiences in leadership. She emphasized the influence of unelected officials and urged for dismantling of what she described as a leftist government. Truss warned of the deceptive and aggressive tactics used by political opponents.
The ex-leader of the government has expressed disapproval of the jest involving lettuce made by the Daily Star, stating that it was not "especially humorous". He mentioned back in June: "I simply find it immature."
She continued to criticize the British media, stating that it has a reputation for being very outspoken globally and does not show much respect to politicians.
The flag protest happened not long after Truss showed her backing for Elon Musk, who has stated that there is a difference in how the UK police different groups of people. She mentioned in an interview: "I am shocked by the limitations on freedom of speech in England and Europe. We can't have true freedom without the ability to speak freely. It's great to see Elon Musk and X standing up to those who try to intimidate others." Musk showed his appreciation, thanking her for her support.
