Jon Landau, a highly successful producer who won an Oscar for his work on blockbuster films like Titanic and Avatar, has passed away at the age of 63.

Landau, who worked closely with director James Cameron for many years, passed away on Friday after battling cancer for over a year.

His sister Tina announced his passing on social media, describing him as "the greatest brother a girl could ever hope for".

"I am feeling a mix of emotions - sadness and pride, grateful for the incredible life he lived and the love and talents he shared with me and everyone who knew him or watched his films," she expressed.

Landau, the offspring of Hollywood producers Ely and Edie Landau, previously held a high-ranking position at the movie production studio 20th Century Fox. During his tenure, he supervised the creation of notable films such as The Last Of The Mohicans and Die Hard 2.

Together with Cameron, he played a significant role in producing the successful film Titanic in 1997, making it the first movie to reach over $1 billion in worldwide box office earnings.

Subsequent movies Avatar and its follow-up Avatar: The Way of Water, which came out in 2009 and 2022, surpassed Titanic's record.

Landau was also involved in the production of successful movies such as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Dick Tracy. He also had a leadership role at Cameron's production company, Lightstorm Entertainment.

After hearing about Landau's passing, Cameron expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that a talented producer and outstanding individual has passed away.

Jon Landau had faith in the power of movies. He thought that film is the most important type of art created by humans, and that to create films, you must first be in touch with your own humanity.

He will be recognized for his incredible generosity and kindness just as much as he will be for his films.

Director Sir Peter Jackson and his wife, screenwriter Fran Walsh, who own a visual effects company that worked on the Avatar films, expressed deep sadness over the passing of Jon Landau in a statement.

"Jon brought unmatched enthusiasm to the projects he was involved in, and his impact will continue to motivate others for a long time."

The actress Zoe Saldaña, known for her role in the Avatar movies, shared a heartfelt message on Instagram to honor Landau, expressing how deeply his passing has affected her.
