Ian Hislop laughs off taxi ‘shooting’ incident on Have I Got News For You
Ian Hislop, the editor of Private Eye, shrugged off an event where the window of the taxi he was in was broken, which people initially thought was caused by a gunshot.
Hislop, who is 64 years old, gave a humorous reply to the situation during Friday's episode of Have I Got News For You on the BBC.
"I often mention how happy I am to be here, but this week, I truly mean it," he joked with the crowd.
He let out a dry chuckle as he remembered a moment from the event that stood out to him.
A police officer looking into my case asked, "I know this might sound like a dumb question, but is there anyone who might hold a grudge against you?"
Paul Merton, who often takes on the role of team captain, quickly responded, "I have an excuse."
On Tuesday, law enforcement was alerted when a black cab driver stuck in traffic in Soho, central London, thought he heard a bullet break his window.
Following their "urgent" inquiries, review of CCTV recordings, and a forensic investigation, the Metropolitan Police determined that a mechanical failure is the most probable cause.
Investigators discovered no signs of any gunfire.
Although he was able to joke about it a few days later with his usual humor, it’s clear that Hislop was unsettled by the event that occurred on Dean Street.
He expressed his gratitude to everyone for their support in a message shared on social media. The editor also appreciated the officers who responded to the situation.
Hislop, who was referred to as the "most litigated individual in English legal history" by the Independent, has served as the editor of Private Eye since 1986. He has also been a regular panellist on the BBC quiz show since it first aired in 1990.
