Wimbledon 2024: Harriet Dart reflects on third round ‘opportunity’ after defeat to Xinyu Wang

Harriet Dart

Harriet Dart viewed her performance in the third round match against Xinyu Wang as a chance that slipped away. The British No.2 was defeated by the world No.42 with a score of 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a match that lasted two hours and 23 minutes.

Dart matched her personal best Grand Slam performance by making it to the round of 32 at Wimbledon this year. She had a strong victory over Katie Boulter in the second round, but ultimately felt a bit let down as she had opportunities to secure the win.

"I had a great chance today," Dart stated. "I found myself in some tough situations where I was ahead and in control. It was really challenging. I mean, to be winning in two sets and still end up losing is quite devastating, to be frank."

I had moments of playing good tennis, but the strong wind made it challenging. However, my opponent also had moments of playing well.

Once Dart won the first set, she had the advantage in the following sets. However, Wang showed resilience and managed to overcome the deficit to make a comeback in the match.

Fighting against both the weather and her rival, Dart suffered defeat in the final six games of the match as the Chinese player secured her spot in the fourth round.

Even though Dart didn't win, there are many good things she can learn from her performance at the tournament.

I think I've been performing well in my recent tennis matches and have achieved some positive outcomes. I had confidence in my abilities and thought I could make a significant impact in my games.

Losing a match where you were ahead twice can be tough to swallow, but that's just how it goes in tennis. It's a sport where you face defeat on a regular basis. The important thing is to keep pushing through and find a way to bounce back.

"I have one more match left to compete in, a mixed doubles match that I am looking forward to. I will give it my all and try my hardest."
