Giardia
What is Giardia?
Giardia is a microscopic parasite that causes the diarrheal illness known as giardiasis. It can be found in soil, food, water, and surfaces that have been contaminated with feces from infected humans or animals. The most common way people get infected is through consuming contaminated drinking water or food, or by swallowing water while swimming in lakes, rivers, or streams. Symptoms of giardiasis include diarrhea, gas, greasy stools, stomach cramps, and dehydration. It is important to seek medical treatment if you suspect you have giardiasis, as it can be easily spread to others through person-to-person contact.
Prevention and Treatment
To prevent giardiasis, it is important to practice good hygiene, such as washing hands with soap and water after using the bathroom, before eating or preparing food, and after touching animals. Avoiding drinking untreated water from lakes or rivers, and ensuring that food is cooked thoroughly can also help prevent infection. If infected, treatment for giardiasis typically involves antibiotics prescribed by a doctor. It is important to finish the entire course of medication to ensure the parasite is completely eliminated from the body. Overall, prevention is key when it comes to avoiding giardia infection.
