The 43-year-old TOWIE star experienced a whirlwind of emotions, from believing she had a connection to Jack The Ripper to finding the ideal name for her baby. A significant aspect of her family background involves her mother Joan’s history, as she was unfortunately left at the hospital as an infant. "Why was she abandoned there? Why didn't anyone return for her?" Gemma pondered during the show, adding that her mother rarely discusses this part of her past.

"I simply believe it’s too difficult for her to visit that place," the celebrity went on to say. "It will be wonderful to understand my mother’s roots and connect all the dots."

Gemma’s mom, Joan, who has been featured on the ITVBe reality show alongside her daughter, was raised by a foster family starting at just two weeks old. In a heartfelt moment with Gemma, Joan shared for the first time her memories of her birth mother visiting when she was four. She remembered how her mother brought her treats and played a Rolling Stones record for her.

"Gemma reflects, 'My mother came and went in my life. I can only imagine how bewildering that must have been for her.'"

In May of this year, Gemma reached out on social media to update her followers about her mother, who had been quickly taken to the hospital and was receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. She expressed that her mother was "very unwell at the moment."

"It's been quite a journey, and I'm feeling a mix of emotions. I'm thankful for the good moments, but I can’t ignore that my mom is in intensive care. The good news is that she’s improving, and I’m really grateful for that."

Three months later, in August, Gemma made a heartfelt request for her mother, Joan, to "come home soon," as she remained in the hospital following what was initially believed to be a simple check-up.

Throughout the challenging time, Gemma shared an emotional tribute to her mother on Instagram, posting a photo of their family by the pool. In the image, Gemma sported a stylish black swimsuit as she relaxed on a white float, while her mother, Joan, gently dipped her hands into the water, holding on to the inflatable. Along with the picture, Gemma expressed her feelings, saying, "Every day is a gift. Mom went in for a check-up and ended up staying in the hospital last night. It's been one issue after another this year."
