New York City Mayor Eric Adams has denied any wrongdoing in response to federal accusations of bribery, wire fraud, soliciting contributions from foreign citizens, and conspiracy.
On Friday afternoon, Adams submitted his plea in federal court in Manhattan. He is the first sitting mayor in the city's recent history to be confronted with federal criminal charges.
On Thursday, U.S. Attorneys in the Southern District of New York announced a detailed five-count indictment against Adams. They allege that he solicited and received unlawful campaign donations for his 2021 mayoral run, along with various other benefits, from foreign individuals.
The accusations arise from a lengthy federal inquiry into his 2021 campaign for mayor, as well as his connections with officials from the Turkish government and individuals from Turkey.
Federal prosecutors are alleging that Adams accepted improper campaign contributions that were funneled through a straw donor scheme. They also claim that he received lavish perks in return for using his influence to intervene in a fire inspection at the Turkish consulate.
Adams expressed that he was "not shocked" by the accusations and firmly rejected any claims of misconduct.
He announced that he wouldn't resign from his role as New York City's leader, even though both current and former lawmakers have urged him to do so.
Eric Adams Scheduled For Court Next Week
Mayor Eric Adams is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday to meet with Judge Dale Ho.
During his court appearance on Friday afternoon, the prosecutors did not ask for Adams to hand over his passport. However, he is not allowed to communicate with the witnesses listed in the indictment. The prosecutors will provide his lawyer, Alex Spiro, with a list of these individuals.
Nonetheless, Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker stated that Adams is allowed to talk about "business or private family issues" since he has mentioned family members and staff.

NYT Editorial Board Urges Eric Adams To Resign
The Editorial Board of The New York Times is urging New York City Mayor Eric Adams to step down following his indictment on federal charges.
The Editorial Board stated, "Mr. Adams faces significant accusations, including claims that he misused over $10 million in public funds for his 2021 campaign."
“The mayor will get his chance to defend himself in court and has the right to a strong defense. However, that doesn’t mean he should make New York City postpone its progress while he works to clear his name,” the Editorial Board stated. “To fulfill his responsibilities to the city that chose him, Mr. Adams should step down right away and allow someone without criminal accusations or ongoing investigations to take over City Hall.”

Trump: Adams Indicted For Criticizing Biden's Policy
Donald Trump seemed to imply that Eric Adams had faced legal charges following his criticism of the Biden administration's approach to "unauthorized immigrants."
During a press conference at Trump Tower on Thursday, the former president remarked that while he wasn't very familiar with Adams, he had been "quite complimentary" in his comments about him.
He went on to say that he had foreseen the mayor's arrest and the charges that followed more than a year ago.
"Around a year ago, I saw him discussing how illegal migrants are negatively impacting our city and stated that the federal government should compensate us instead of forcing us to accept them. I thought to myself, 'I bet he’ll be facing charges within the year,' and it turns out I was completely correct," he noted.
