Dua Lipa is back with new single ‘Houdini’ - Here’s why we’re excited

Dua Lipa

This morning, we were treated to the first tease of Dua Lipa's much-awaited third album with the debut of a brand-new single titled 'Houdini'. Let's get you up to speed on the details...

After a lapse of three and a half years, British-Albanian crooner Dua Lipa is making a comeback with a brand new single created in conjunction with Australian music wunderkind Kevin Parker (known as Tame Impala) which will be dropping on Friday. The twenty-five-year-old star's previous album 'Future Nostalgia' was hugely popular across the globe.

The latest single 'Houdini' from the third album is a groovy tune with elements of disco and electro-dance. Parker showcases his multi-talented skills by playing bass, drums, guitar, keyboards and percussion on the track.

Using alternative language: On Instagram, Dua Lipa hinted at an upcoming project with a photo of herself and the musician in a recording studio. The duo had previously collaborated on the soundtrack for Greta Gerwig's film, Barbie. As part of that project, the popular 28-year-old singer created the hit song “Dance The Night Away”.

This brand new single is titled after the well-known illusionist Harry Houdini. It's not a complete novelty for the musician, as her prior album had an 80s-influenced pop-dance vibe that was evident in all of her tracks. This particular vibe is still prevalent in the latest single.

The hints of change that were mentioned do not suggest a complete overhaul. During an interview with NME, the musician revealed that her upcoming third album will maintain a pop vibe, but with a different sound.

Although the new release features more innovative team members, its sound remains relatively unchanged. Nevertheless, it is a fantastic dance song that is sure to be a hit in nightclubs. To fully assess the album, we will have to wait until it is available. It may include some psychedelic rock influences from Tame Impala and venture into more unconventional musical territory.

The artist stated in a recent interview with Variety that her third album has taken a different direction from her previous work. She suggested that 1970s-style psychedelia had a major influence on the album. She also emphasized that this change was not impossible.

Currently, Dua Lipa's music is staying true to her recognizable style and successful methods while also incorporating a more energetic and rhythmic element, as can be heard in "Houdini." This track has a stronger impact than her past releases due to its dynamic bassline and overall intensity, creating a more heated atmosphere.

The main focus of the song revolves around Dua Lipa boldly urging a man to demonstrate that he is worthy of her attention. If he falls short of impressing her, she warns that she will vanish just like that… as you probably suspected.

"I am here and then gone / Show me that you have what it takes to satisfy me / Keep me interested or I will leave you behind / Like the great escape artist, Houdini."

According to a statement from the vocalist, the new song is a sarcastic way to honor the state of being single. It delves into the concept of whether a person is deserving of their time or if they will be ignored eventually.

The tune has been continuously playing in this working space, and it becomes more and more infectious as time passes.

Dua Lipa's third album doesn't have a specific name or release date yet. However, we do know that it's scheduled to come out in 2024, and fans are incredibly excited for it as it's one of the most eagerly awaited albums of the year.

There are speculations going around that she will be the main act at Glastonbury in the year 2024 – gossip that will gain more momentum once her new release is out.

If you're curious as to why we're generating some excitement, it's due to her release of a new album in 2020.

Undoubtedly, 'Future Nostalgia' stands out as one of the most amazing and contemporary pop music albums. It has a lively and irresistible compilation of songs that one can't afford to ignore even for a second during its entire runtime of 39 minutes. It boasts hit tracks like 'Levitating', 'Physical' and 'Don't Start Now', and has impressively sold 7 million copies worldwide.

Even though the Albanian-British vocalist was already quite popular in the pop industry with her self-named album released in 2017, 'Future Nostalgia' shot her to fame, making her one of the most renowned stars globally. The LP ranked high in our list of the best European albums of the 21st century, and as we noted in our appraisal: "It's hard to believe that an album released in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, with limited club access, managed to get people grooving more than ever!"

What are your thoughts on 'Houdini'?

Whether you adore it or find it unoriginal, get ready to listen to this song a lot during the winter.
