Happy Diwali 2024

Diwali

At DMU, we embrace the vibrant diversity of our community and want to extend warm wishes for a joyful Diwali to all our staff and students. This year, Diwali falls on Thursday, October 31, and is a festival celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists.

Commonly referred to as Deepavali, which translates to 'series of illuminated lamps' or the 'Festival of Lights', this celebration represents the victory of light over darkness, wisdom over ignorance, goodness over evil, and optimism over despair.

Diwali festivities typically involve spiritual rituals, adorning homes and temples with colorful decorations and tiny oil lamps called diyas. This is a joyful occasion marked by contemplation and bonding, usually enjoyed with loved ones who gather to indulge in tasty dishes like samosas and traditional sweets known as mithai. The celebrations also feature spectacular firework shows, wearing elegant clothing, and the exchange of gifts.

Leicester hosts some of the most incredible Diwali festivities you can find outside of India. The standout feature of the celebration will be an impressive fireworks show along with live performances on Diwali Day, which falls on Thursday, October 31.

Leicester’s Golden Mile will be spectacularly illuminated, reaching its peak of festivities on Diwali Day, Thursday, October 31. The main stage activities will take place at Cossington Recreation Ground from 5 PM to 8:30 PM, featuring a variety of performances arranged by the Leicester Hindu Festival Council.

Fireworks are a major attraction during Diwali celebrations, with a spectacular show scheduled for 7:30 PM on Diwali Day. Get ready for an impressive mix of aerial displays and special effects that will be visible from all around the event area.

Leicester’s well-known Wheel of Light will be parked on Belgrave Road until Saturday, November 2.
