Dele Alli was surprised at the reaction to his emotional interview with Gary Neville about his struggles with mental health. Although currently unable to play due to an injury, he made a appearance on Monday Night Football when Everton played Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
A player who used to play for Spurs, but has been unable to play since March 2023 due to a muscle problem, recently appeared on TV to talk about football with David Jones and Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports. This was his first time appearing on TV, after he previously had an honest conversation with Neville last year.
He fearlessly spoke about his struggle with addiction and looked back on his childhood experience of sexual abuse, causing both him and the former Manchester United player to cry. Jones lauded Dele for being honest and asked how he was doing at present.
The young man of 28 years acknowledged that his life is getting better and shared that the response to his impactful interview was huge. He mentioned, "When I went on the show, I expressed that my goal was to aid at least one person. The response and backing that I received were truly overpowering. It was extraordinary to witness how many individuals it benefitted. Undeniably, I'm extremely gratified of it."
Alli discussed his progress in rehab and his strong desire to return to playing soccer, informing his supporters: "I'm making great progress. I'm feeling splendid. Obviously, the injury was upsetting. Despite that, I'm doing well. I believe I stated in my interview that I was at my peak at that time."
After completing my rehabilitation program, I am excited to return to playing again. It hasn't been an easy road, but I am embracing the experience. All that's left now is to eagerly prepare for my comeback.
