The second-ranked player was defeated in two consecutive sets, 6-4 6-3, by her compatriot Emma Navarro on the main court.

Wimbledon is the only major tournament where Gauff, who won the US Open on hard courts and was a finalist at Roland Garros on clay, has not made it to the quarterfinals.

She had made it to the fourth stage at SW19 twice before, once in her first appearance in 2019 when she was just 15 years old and defeated former champion Venus Williams.

Gauff appeared to be a strong contender for the championship this year, especially after defeating her rival, the top-ranked player Iga Swiatek, on Saturday. The draw has also been favorable for her chances.

However, it is now Navarro, the 23-year-old resident of New York, who defeated Naomi Osaka in the second round, who has the opportunity to benefit.

On Tuesday, she will compete against the seventh-ranked player from Italy, Jasmine Paolini. If she wins, she may advance to the semi-finals to face either Lulu Sun, who qualified for the tournament, or Donna Vekic, who is ranked 37th in the world from Croatia.

"I feel so lucky to be playing on Centre Court at a tournament with so much tradition and history. I’m really excited to have the opportunity to play again," Navarro said with gratitude.

I adopted a proactive playing style. Coco is a fantastic player and I greatly admire her. I aimed to challenge her game and I believe I succeeded in doing so.

Gauff seemed at ease with her playing when she managed to secure an early break, but Navarro quickly retaliated.

The player ranked 19th in the tournament put pressure on Gauff's serve and was able to win the second set with an impressive shot down the line.

The Gauff's forehand was not performing well and she looked very sad, making gestures towards her team, while Navarro was able to break her serve again, bringing the score to 3-1 in the second set.

Gauff managed to avoid losing the match on two occasions when Navarro was about to win the set, but unfortunately she eventually lost after hitting another forehand into the net.
