Children in Need: Sailing club takes on 24-hour challenge
Young individuals participated in a 24-hour sailing event to collect funds for Children in Need.
Members of the Salterns Sailing Club in Lymington, Hampshire, aim to collect £9,000 by embarking on a non-stop sailing journey around Eight Acre Pond for an entire day.
The one-of-a-kind club, managed by kids, has organized the sponsored sail for 25 years. This year, they aim to raise their total donations to £200,000.
Boats were set off at 4:30 PM GMT on Friday, with the competition expected to wrap up by Saturday afternoon.
Eight Acre Pond, a historical saltpan and a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest, features calm, shallow waters with no tides, providing a safe environment for children to practice sailing.
The club is managed by young individuals under the age of 16, who have reached out to all nearby schools to participate in the fundraising event.
The sailing club has welcomed its current members, previous members affectionately called Old Salts, and friends of the club.
Holly, a member of the club's junior committee, mentioned that the event promises to be "a lot of fun because the team shares a great sense of togetherness."
Club member Clodagh decided to work the night shift, setting off on Saturday morning at dawn.
"We plan to tackle this by working in pairs and rotating every thirty minutes," she mentioned.
We'll be packing plenty of candies and chocolate to help us along the way, but fingers crossed that we manage to stay warm and get enough rest.
Later in the morning, students from local schools were set to participate, and Olympic sailor Hannah Snellgrove was also coming to lend her support to the event.
