Fergal O'Brien, a previous winner of the British Open, has decided to retire from professional snooker. He lost his first World Championship qualifier match 10-8 against Mostafa Dorgham, who currently ranks as the world's No. 125 player from Egypt.

O'Brien, who is ranked 106th in the world, was winning 3-0 initially, but then his opponent won three of the last four frames, making the score 4-4. Eventually, his opponent advanced to the second qualifying round at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

In the 2000/01 season, the Irish player achieved the 9th position. This occurred two years after he attained victory in the British Open of 1999 where he overcame Anthony Hamilton with a 9-7 score. Additionally, in 2001, he participated in a Masters final that people still remember, but unfortunately, he lost 10-9 to Paul Hunter.

In the year 2000, he made it to the quarter-finals of the World Championship and was then defeated by Mark Williams with a score of 13-5.
