The Grande Maumelle Sailing Club (GMSC) will be the venue for the 2024 Championship of Champions. This lively sailing club, operated by volunteers, is committed to promoting sailing and sailboat racing and is located just outside Little Rock, Arkansas. With around 212 family members and a year-round schedule of races, GMSC focuses on one-design racing. They host dinghy races from May to November and PHRF keelboat races during the winter months. A strong sense of pride is evident at GMSC, as the majority of the club's facilities have been built by its own members, highlighting the close bonds and commitment within the community.
“What we take the most pride in is our spirit of volunteerism,” shared Event Chair Drew Daugherty. “Since we don’t have any employees or a restaurant and bar, we handle everything ourselves. This mindset is what truly strengthens our club.”
Previous Experience Organizing US Sailing Championships
GMSC has a history of organizing significant events, having held the Championship of Champions in both 1998 and 2006. The idea to host these championships originated with a member of the club who developed a strong enthusiasm for the event in the 1990s, ultimately resulting in GMSC being chosen to oversee it. This commitment has persisted, with numerous club members taking part in the Championship of Champions throughout the years. Additionally, that same member went on to oversee the event for US Sailing for many years, highlighting GMSC’s deep ties and contributions to this prestigious competition.
Organizing the Championship of Champions
GMSC is excited to welcome back the Championship of Champions. The club wants to give participants a chance to enjoy the stunning lake and the friendly atmosphere of their community. This event also offers an opportunity to showcase the Y-Flyer, a boat that has been a significant part of GMSC's legacy since the late 1950s.
Advice for Upcoming Hosts
Daugherty stresses the significance of attending the event before taking on the role of host, as it offers essential understanding of what is required. "Make sure to attend the event prior to hosting to grasp everything that goes into it," Daugherty advised. He points out that it is crucial for the entire club to be on board to make the event truly special. He also notes the vital part the host class of boat plays in achieving success. GMSC has Y-Flyer members traveling from all over the country with their boats to support the event, emphasizing the value of community participation.
The Delight of Welcoming Sailors
At GMSC, welcoming sailors is all about creating bonds and friendships with fellow competitors from across the nation. When national champions are involved, it brings a special element to the experience, helping to establish enduring relationships and cultivating a community of sailors that continues well after the event concludes.
Key Moments and Development of the Club
GMSC takes great pride in its vibrant volunteer culture. Without employees, a restaurant, or a bar, members actively participate in every part of the club, creating a genuine sense of belonging and camaraderie. This commitment has allowed GMSC to develop and flourish as a real "sailing" club. Moreover, the club's location near a stunning lake, only a few miles from town, offers a perfect backdrop for those passionate about sailing.
A Note from GMSC
The Grande Maumelle Sailing Club is excited to demonstrate its sailing capabilities and friendly atmosphere to participants from all over the country.
