Barry Keoghan, the star of Saltburn, has released a statement denouncing the “appalling” actions of some fans after speculation arose about his breakup with singer Sabrina Carpenter, known for her song "Espresso."
This comes soon after the 32-year-old disabled his Instagram account.
Carpenter, 25, and Keoghan were initially rumored to be dating in December 2023. However, a source has now told People magazine that the pair is currently on a “break” so they can concentrate on their professional lives.
Nonetheless, gossip soon circulated on the internet suggesting that the breakup was due to Keoghan's unfaithfulness, despite there being no proof to support this claim. (The Independent has previously reached out to representatives for both Keoghan and Carpenter for a statement.)
Keoghan, who recently revealed that he has "never trusted love" because of his experience in foster care, has released a statement addressing the criticism he has faced. In it, he highlights how the situation has affected his loved ones as well.
"I can only endure so much," he stated in a post on X/Twitter on Saturday (December 7). "My name has been tossed around online in ways that I typically don’t address."
"I need to speak up now because things are starting to go too far. I've decided to deactivate my account because I can't allow this to interfere with my family and my job any longer."
He went on to describe the instances of verbal mistreatment he has endured.
"The messages I've gotten are things no one should ever have to see. They're filled with complete falsehoods, hatred, and repulsive remarks about my looks, my character, my abilities as a parent, and everything else you can think of that's just cruel and inhuman."
"Pulling my reputation and everything I’ve put so much effort into down into the mud. They’re sharing stories about how I was seen as a little champion and how I’ve matured over the years, even bringing my beloved mother into the conversation."
He mentioned that his family, which includes his grandmother and his child, has faced threats and intimidation.
"Knocking on my grandmother's door and loitering outside my little boy's house, trying to scare them—that's going too far," he stated.
