Aston Villa vs Tottenham Prediction and Preview
The upcoming Aston Villa vs Tottenham football match at Villa Park is a massive event. Both teams are aiming to qualify for the Champions League, and we're all excitedly anticipating the game. Here's our prediction and an overview of what to expect.
Aston Villa Vs Tottenham Statistics: Fast Facts
For many European clubs, the UEFA Champions League football is the ultimate goal. The Sunday early match between Aston Villa and Tottenham, which will take place at Villa Park, could have a big impact on both teams' chances of qualifying.
Villa successfully navigated a challenging match against Ajax on Thursday, as they managed to secure a 0-0 draw in the first phase of the Europa Conference League's round of 16 in Amsterdam.
Unai Emery's team is currently ranked fourth in the league and they have a five-point lead over Tottenham as they prepare for Matchday 28. However, Tottenham has a game in hand, so things are not yet set in stone. Meanwhile, Aston Villa recently won a match against Luton Town by a score of 3-2. Lucas Digne scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute, after Tahith Chong and Carlton Morris had earlier scored to cancel out Ollie Watkins' first-half brace at Kenilworth Road. Watkins has been in top form lately.
This season, Watkins has managed to score 16 goals in the Premier League. This is the most he has scored in a single season. It's worth noting that only two Villa players have achieved higher goal tallies in a single season: Christian Benteke scored 19 goals in 2012-13 and Dwight Yorke scored 17 goals in both 1995-96 and 1996-97.
Thanks to Watkins' impressive scoring, Villa has managed to score 59 goals in the current competition season, which is already their highest record since Martin O'Neill in 2007-08 with 71 goals. This achievement is also the most goals scored at this point in a top-flight campaign for the team in 91 years, with 68 goals recorded in the 1932-33 season.
Leon Bailey helped create Watkins' first goal against Luton. In fact, the two of them have worked together to score seven goals in the Premier League this season, which is more than any other pair in the league.
This season, Douglas Luiz has scored several goals, but they were all at Villa Park. He has scored nine goals at home, which is only second to Georginio Wijnaldum (who scored 11 goals in the 2015-16 season) and Les Ferdinand (who scored 10 goals in the 2000-01 season) for the most goals scored in a single season. All of his goals were scored at Villa Park. Out of his 20 goals in his career in the Premier League, 16 were scored at Villa's home ground, which is 80%. This is the highest ratio for any player who has scored 20 or more goals in the history of the competition.
Regarding the updates on Emery's team, there hasn't been much difference in the last seven days. There are still some players who won't be able to play for a while, including Diego Carlos, Jhon Durán, Tyrone Mings, Emiliano Buendía, and Boubacar Kamara. Fortunately, Ezri Konsa has recovered from his knee issue and is back to playing after being sent off in Europe on Thursday. There weren't any fresh injuries to report from Villa's game against Ajax in the Europa Conference League last Thursday.
If Timo Werner hadn't scored in the 79th minute before Cristian Romero and Son Heung-Min sealed the deal with a 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace, Spurs would have been even further ahead of Villa. Eberechi Eze's 59th-minute free-kick opener at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium now seems like a distant memory.
Werner made his first-ever league goal for Spurs, which was also his first goal in the competition since April 2022 when he played for Chelsea against Arsenal. The German player has now joined the club of four players who have scored for both Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League, alongside Eidur Gudjohnsen, William Gallas, and Gustavo Poyet.
In the last 20 times Son has played in the Premier League, he has had a hand in scoring or creating 19 goals - scoring 13 of them and assisting in 6 others. If you look even further back to the start of the 2020-21 season, only Mohamed Salah with 118 goals involvements and Harry Kane with 96 goals involvements (who now plays in the Bundesliga) have more than Son's 63 goals and 29 assists in the English top division.
The forward from South Korea has scored five times in three matches at Villa Park, with an average of scoring every 52 minutes. Out of all the players who have played more than 250 minutes in a Premier League stadium, only ex-Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has a better record of scoring every 38 minutes at Norwich City's Carrow Road.
The numbers of attackers for Tottenham show that their manager Ange Postecoglou has an impressive attacking crew, even though their forward Richarlison won't be able to play in the upcoming game due to a knee injury. However, Manor Solomon and Pedro Porro might join the team for their match against Aston Villa. Sadly, the only players who won't be able to play for a longer period are goalkeeper Fraser Forster and Ryan Sessegnon.
Aston Villa Vs Tottenham: Head-to-Head Clash
Villa may feel optimistic about their prospects in this match because they have emerged victorious in their last three encounters with Tottenham in the Premier League. This is their longest streak of consecutive league victories over Spurs since January 1996, when they managed to win four in a row.
Earlier this season, Emery's team won 2-1 against Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. Pau Torres and Watkins scored for the team, canceling out Giovani Lo Celso's goal.
In the previous season, the Spurs were also defeated in this same match with a score of 2-1. This was due to the goals scored by Watkins and Jacob Ramsey, which occurred before Kane, who has since left the team, scored a penalty in the 90th minute.
The loss marked the end of Tottenham's 11-game unbeaten streak in the Premier League at Villa Park, spanning from March 2009 to April 2022. Although, it is worth noting that Tottenham hasn't experienced consecutive losses in away matches against Villa since November 2004.
In recent times, Villa has been performing spectacularly in the Premier League as they have managed to secure victories in four of their last five matches. Moreover, they have won three consecutive games against Luton, Nottingham Forest, and Fulham, which is an impressive winning streak. This achievement indicates that Villa has accomplished their fourth streak of three or more consecutive wins under the leadership of Emery. Prior to Emery's appointment, only two managers - Dean Smith in 2020 and Steven Gerrard in 2022 - had managed to achieve this feat since the departure of O'Neill in 2010.
In comparison, Tottenham hasn't been doing too well in their away Premier League matches lately - they've only managed to win one out of their last six (with three draws and two losses). This is despite the fact that they've scored two or more goals in five of those games. The last time they were consistently scoring two or more goals in their away league games was between May and September of 2017, when they managed to do so for six consecutive matches.
The bold and aggressive playing style of Spurs has enabled them to score in every single one of their 26 Premier League matches under Postecoglou. This is the most impressive start by a manager in the English top-flight since Tottenham's Arthur Rowe in the 1950-51 season. The title-winning Tottenham team managed to score in each of their first 27 games.
In the past four league games played on Villa Park, Villa has let their opponents score nine times (two wins and two losses). This is more goals than they let in during their previous 16 home games (which was eight). Emery's team has also let in two or more goals in their last four games, but they have still managed to win two of them (against Burnley and Nottingham Forest with scores of 3-2 and 4-2, respectively). Villa has only won one game out of 31 at home between 2019-20 and 2022-23 when letting in two or more goals. In the other games, they either drew (four times) or lost (26 times).
It's reasonable to assume that neither team will keep a clean record.

Predicting Aston Villa Vs Tottenham Result
The Opta computer experienced difficulty in predicting the outcome between the two teams and conducted 10,000 simulations before the match. The results were inconclusive, with Villa winning 38.5% of the simulations and Tottenham winning 33.4%.
If Aston Villa ties their upcoming game, they will maintain a five-point advantage over Tottenham. Based on statistical projections, this outcome is anticipated in 28.1% of simulated scenarios. If this happens, it could harm Tottenham's efforts to secure one of the top four spots in the league standings.
Opta's end-of-season simulations show that Villa is still the most likely team to secure fourth place and a guaranteed spot in the Champions League, with a 61.8% chance of doing so. However, Tottenham's chances for the same position are not far behind, rated at 31.1%. It's worth noting that even if a team finishes fifth in the league table, they could still qualify for the top club tournament in Europe, but Manchester United may try to make a late push for that spot as well.
