Meet Labour’s new North East mayor Kim McGuinness as Labour sees off Jamie Driscoll

North East Mayor

The winner of the recent North East mayoral election is the Labour Party, having beaten Jamie Driscoll, a former Labour mayor running as an independent candidate.

Kim McGuinness was victorious with over 185,000 votes, clearly besting Driscoll who only earned approximately 126,000 votes.

The Reform UK party ranked in the fourth position while the Conservatives secured the third spot.

A new survey on the election showed that McGuinness is only slightly in the lead compared to Driscoll, who is a leftist and was not allowed to compete as the Labor Party's contender for the position of mayor.

McGuinness, who was raised in a council home in Newcastle, was chosen as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Northumbria via a by-election in 2019, and then won re-election in 2021. She has also been a councilperson for Newcastle, and in the past, she has worked in the financial and charitable sectors.

In the recent mayoral elections, Labour succeeded in achieving their first mayoral victory, but came up short in the East Midlands. They were unable to replicate their triumph in the Tees Valley, where they lost to Conservative representative Ben Houchen.

According to Driscoll, his campaign that relies on people's support will not end with a single election outcome. This implies that he might persist in posing a competition for the Labour Party in the area.

Wow, what a remarkable effort. I am so impressed by all those who dedicated their time, effort, resources, and support through voting.

After the latest GE survey conducted in the North East indicated that Labour received over 60% of the ballots, many experts assumed that Labour would easily win the election. However, it is noteworthy that we garnered an impressive 126,652 entire votes, which is almost...

The Mayor, Jamie Driscoll, tweeted on May 3, 2024.

The North East mayoral election delivered a victory for the Labour party, following their recent triumph in the Blackpool South parliamentary by-election by a significant margin. Additionally, the party has gained several councils previously held by the Conservatives.

The Labour party has gained power in the areas of Thurrock, Redditch, Hyndburn, Rushmoor, and Hartlepool. However, they lost their control of Oldham due to a decline in council seats after being defeated by independent candidates.
